Vietnam welcomes record of more than 12 million international visitors in the first 7 months of the year

In the first 7 months of the year, Vietnam welcomed a record of more than 12 million international visitors, an increase of nearly 23% over the same period last year.

According to data released this morning by the General Statistics Office, in July, international visitors to Vietnam reached 1.56 million, up nearly 7% compared to June and up nearly 36% compared to the same period last year. In the first 7 months, Vietnam welcomed more than 12.2 million international visitors, up nearly 23% compared to the same period last year and up 25% compared to 2019 - the golden year of Vietnamese tourism .

The peak tourist season for international visitors in Vietnam is usually from September - October to March - April of the following year, with July being the low tourist season. However, the number of international visitors arriving in July this year is as high as the number of visitors arriving in the peak season of September 2019.

According to the directors of travel companies specializing in the inbound market (international arrivals), this is a bright spot in the context of world tourism being affected by political fluctuations, wars and tightening visa policies in many countries. With the current growth rate and welcoming guests, Vietnam can completely complete the target of welcoming 22-23 million visitors by the end of the year.

The number of arrivals by air in July still reached the highest level, with more than 1.32 million arrivals, followed by road with more than 234,000 arrivals and waterway with more than 2.5 thousand arrivals.

According to the General Statistics Office, favorable visa policies, enhanced tourism promotion programs, and many activities celebrating major national holidays have attracted more and more international visitors to Vietnam.

Mainland China remained the largest market sending visitors to Vietnam in July with over 391,000 arrivals, followed by South Korea with over 317,000 arrivals. The next largest markets sending visitors were still "familiar faces" like previous months including Japan, Taiwan, India, Russia, Australia, and the US.

In terms of growth drivers, Russia is the market with the highest growth rate, with the number of arrivals in July this year equal to 300% compared to the same period in 2024. The next top markets with high growth rates include China and European countries with unilateral visa exemptions from Vietnam such as Germany, France, Italy, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and the UK.

According to the World Tourism Barometer (WTB) published in May and recently released by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), in the first quarter of this year, Vietnam's tourism had the 6th highest growth rate of international visitors in the world, up 30% compared to the same period in 2024. In the Asia-Pacific region, Vietnam ranked first, followed by Japan and the Republic of Palau.

Vietnam also ranked second in terms of international tourist arrival recovery (up 34% compared to 2019) and fourth in terms of total tourism revenue growth, with 29%, compared to 2024. In the third quarter ranking of the Henley Passport Index (Global Passport Ranking Index), the Vietnamese passport also increased 7 places compared to the beginning of the year, rising from position 91 to 84.
