Vietnam and Norway aim to strengthen cooperation in green economy

Cooperation in areas such as green maritime and renewable energy will be further promoted between Vietnam and Norway in the coming time.

The Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam held a ceremony to celebrate the 211th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution Day (17/5/1814 – 17/5/2025) in Hanoi on 16/5.

On this occasion, Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam, Ms. Hilde Solbakken, and Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister, Ms. Le Thi Thu Hang, shared their views on Vietnam-Norway relations and the potential for bilateral cooperation, especially in areas related to the green economy and the circular economy.

Specifically, Ms. Hilde Solbakken emphasized that Norway highly values ​​the close cooperation between the two countries in jointly seeking solutions to overcome global challenges, including climate change and ocean protection.

In particular, Vietnam and Norway are working closely to accelerate the green energy transition and strengthen cooperation in the field of green maritime.

Vietnam is currently Norway's second largest trading partner in ASEAN (after Singapore), with total two-way trade turnover reaching over 450 million USD by 2024. Of which, Norway's seafood exports to Vietnam have exceeded 250 million USD, an increase of 16% compared to 2023.

Currently, Norway has 60 FDI projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital exceeding 200 million USD, ranking 40th among countries and territories investing in Vietnam.

According to the Ambassador, cooperation in promoting green and circular economy between the two countries is showing positive signs, especially in improving waste management, sustainable aquaculture, and renewable energy. Therefore, the two countries need to continue to cooperate in these areas in the coming time.

Ms. Hilde Solbakken also emphasized that both Norway and Vietnam are open economies that are heavily dependent on trade.

Therefore, she hopes that negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) (including Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) will make significant progress this year, contributing to promoting trade between the two countries.

“In a world facing many challenges, it is more important than ever to cherish and maintain strong and growing relationships like the one between Norway and Vietnam. We particularly value our long-standing relationship with Vietnam and are optimistic about the future of our cooperation,” Ms. Hilde Solbakken emphasized.

Sharing the same view, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang also affirmed that the relationship between Vietnam and Norway is developing very well and has achieved many positive results, especially in the field of green economy.

Many Norwegian companies have played an active role in bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of renewable energy and green shipping.

To promote this great potential, the Deputy Minister said the two countries are actively coordinating to build a new cooperation framework in the field of sustainable marine economy and renewable energy, supporting Vietnam to implement the Joint Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with a group of international partners, including Norway.

The Deputy Minister also expressed hope that in the coming time, more Vietnamese enterprises will increase investment in Norway.
