Vietcombank warns of fake bank employees inviting to open credit cards

Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) has issued a warning about the practice of impersonating bank employees to call and invite them to open credit cards in order to steal money from accounts.

According to Vietcombank , recently there has been a form of fraud in which the impersonator impersonates Vietcombank employees and call centers to invite customers to issue credit cards. The trick is that the scammer pretends to be a bank employee, calls, sends messages (SMS, Zalo, messenger...) to persuade customers to proactively open a non-physical debit card or apply for a credit card at the bank.

In some cases, when receiving a call, customers will hear a message impersonating an automated switchboard: " Congratulations, you are eligible to issue a credit card at the bank. If the customer has a need, press 1 or press 0 to speak to the operator." If the customer presses the key, the scammer will hang up the call, then call back, claiming to be a bank employee. The scammer asks the customer to provide some card information to link the customer's card to their e-wallet, thereby appropriating money in the customer's card. The scammer can also ask the customer to provide account number information, personal information (CCCD, biometric image...), service security information to log in to the banking application and appropriate the customer's assets.

Vietcombank recommends that customers absolutely do not provide security information (card information, VCBDigibank application password, OTP code) to anyone. Vietcombank does not require customers to provide service security information in any form. In addition, customers should not access strange links or scan QR codes of unknown origin sent via email, text messages (SMS) or social networks. Vietcombank does not send emails or SMS messages containing links to customers.
