According to China's state broadcaster CCTV, the incident occurred at around 1 p.m. on February 22 at an open-pit mine managed by Xinjing Coal Company, killing six people and leaving 47 missing. Nearly 1,000 people and many vehicles and machines were mobilized to participate in the search and rescue operation.

Inner Mongolia is one of China’s largest coal-producing regions. Mining accidents have occurred in the country in the past. Most recently, in December 2022, an underground gold mine in Xinjiang, northwest of the country, collapsed with about 40 workers inside. In 2021, a coal mine in Shanxi province flooded, killing two miners and rescuing 20 others.
