Potential of "heavenly time, favorable location"
With its unique geographical features, Ca Mau has all the "heavenly time and favorable terrain" for the profession of raising swiftlets. Bird's nest, a product known for its high nutritional and medicinal value, is always an expensive commodity on the market, bringing in attractive profits. This economic attraction has urged the number of bird's nest farms to constantly increase. According to statistics from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the whole province currently has over 1,790 bird's nest houses, with a total output of raw bird's nest harvested in the year of over 7,560 kg.
From this model, many families have succeeded, earning high profits. For example, Mr. Le Tan Muoi (Tran Van Thoi Commune) only invested in a 160 m2 birdhouse, which can be harvested all year round. Raising swiftlets does not require feeding, just care and creating a good living environment for the birds. "With this birdhouse, I collect over 20 kg of bird's nests each year, the more I raise them the more I enjoy them," Mr. Muoi excitedly shared.
Like Mr. Muoi's family, Mrs. Tran Hong Phuc's family (Tran Van Thoi Commune) has been involved in the bird's nest farming business for more than 10 years. Mrs. Phuc's bird's nest farming was quite favorable when after only 6 months of building the house, the birds had nests. Mrs. Phuc said: "On average, each month, my 160 m² bird's nest house yields 2-3 kg of raw bird's nests. That is a stable source of income, quite high compared to the current standard of living."
A delegation of officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Ca Mau province researched raw bird's nest products in Tran Van Thoi Commune.
However, developing the bird's nest farming industry also poses many challenges. Mr. Phan Minh Khoi, Deputy Head of the Animal Husbandry Management Department of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, informed: "The bird's nest farming industry in Ca Mau province has developed quite rapidly in recent years, contributing to the development of the local economy. However, bird's nest farming is almost spontaneous, and there is no clear planning of bird's nest farming areas , so environmental and disease control is difficult. In addition, it is necessary to comply with the provisions of the Animal Husbandry Law and Decree 13 of the Government such as: regulations on noise, sound intensity emitted at the engine; limits on loudspeaker hours; bans in urban areas... Only by complying with these regulations can farmers ensure the harmony of economic benefits and community life."
Swallows make nests.
At the same time, the biggest challenge now is the output and product price. Although Ca Mau produces high-quality bird's nests, when output increases, prices tend to decrease. Previously, the price of raw bird's nests was 30 million VND/kg, now it is only over 10 million VND/kg. Depending on the domestic market and the lack of an export strategy is holding back the true value of Ca Mau bird's nests.
Need for sustainable development orientation
For "white gold" of Ca Mau to truly reach new heights and bring sustainable economic efficiency to the people, relevant agencies need to take practical actions.
Emphasizing the importance of continuing to develop a resolution on bird nest farming areas, Mr. Phan Minh Khoi added: "Swallow farming requires clear planning, including the development and implementation of specific bird nest farming area planning, demarcation of farming areas and prohibited areas to effectively control the environment, noise, and epidemics. At the same time, there needs to be management and guidance for people to properly implement legal regulations on farming conditions, food safety and hygiene, and disease prevention."

"Along with that, it is necessary to focus on quality control, to build a process to control the quality of bird's nests from harvesting to processing, to ensure quality and traceability of the product's origin. Moreover, it is necessary to pay attention to finding and expanding the market. Invest in building, promoting the brand and supporting cooperatives and cooperative groups to link production and consumption, improving the position of farmers," Mr. Khoi emphasized.
In order for the "white gold" products from Ca Mau to continuously expand and affirm their value in the domestic and international markets, in addition to investment from farmers, it is also important to have a clear strategy and direction from management agencies./.
