Nearly three and a half years after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, India is preparing public opinion and favorable premises to move towards normalizing relations with Afghanistan.
Mr. Vikram Misri, a leader of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs , recently met with the Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Dubai (UAE). To date, Mr. Misri is the most senior Indian official to have direct contact with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
So far, the Taliban has only had high-level meetings with very few countries in the world . China has taken the lead in quickly establishing direct contact and dialogue at high levels with Taliban representatives, and has strongly promoted cooperation with this regime. Compared to both China and Russia, India has been much slower in approaching the Taliban.
It seems that India has realized that it cannot delay any longer in moving closer to the Taliban regime. The practical and strategic benefits for India in conquering the Taliban are to ensure security against the threat of attacks from radical Islamist forces in the region, at the same time prevent Afghanistan from being blockaded by China and to use the Taliban to confront Pakistan.
The trump cards used by India in this game are humanitarian aid and implementation of development cooperation projects in Afghanistan. India’s most important partner and ally in conquering the Taliban is Iran. For the Taliban, this hand of India is like a wish come true and brings many benefits. This change in the relationship between India and Afghanistan will fundamentally change the political, security and international relations situation in this region.
