According to PROSEA (Plant Resources of South East Asia) - a research unit on plant resources in Southeast Asia - star anise is a rare spice plant, commonly known as star anise or star anise, the dried fruit is used as a spice and medicine, and can only be harvested twice a year.

In the world , star anise is distributed very limitedly, mainly in the North of Vietnam such as Lang Son (40,000ha), Quang Ninh (8,600ha), Cao Bang (4,500ha)... and some regions of China, mainly in Guangxi (85%), Yunnan.

Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) cited information from the World Spice Association saying that Vietnam's star anise output ranks second in the world, after China, with an annual output of about 22,000 tons.

In the past 8 months, Vietnam's star anise exports continued to increase with 10,248 tons, up more than 12% over the same period in 2024. Export turnover reached 40.1 million USD, down 8.1%.

There are currently more than 70 markets importing this product from Vietnam, of which India, the US and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are the three largest markets. In the past 8 months, these three markets continued to import 7,702 tons, 640 tons and 161 tons respectively. Vietnam has two largest exporting enterprises with turnover of 1,819 tons and 1,721 tons respectively.

Previously, in 2024, Vietnam exported 14,004 tons of star anise, with a total export turnover of 63.7 million USD. India, the US and China were the three main importing countries, reaching 9,352 tons, 563 tons and 420 tons, respectively.

In the international market, the wholesale price of dried star anise ranges from 5-8 USD/kg, depending on the type, batch and quality. In Vietnam, the common selling price is from 140,000-350,000 VND/kg, depending on the type.

Currently, the area of star anise cultivation in Vietnam is about 55,000 hectares, with an annual harvest of about 22,000 tons, while China's annual star anise output reaches 90,000-95,000 tons.

In Vietnam, star anise can only grow well and produce high yields in areas with an altitude of 300-700m above sea level, with a mild, cool, humid climate in the provinces of Lang Son, Cao Bang , Thai Nguyen and Quang Ninh.

However, due to the favorable natural conditions of the local climate and soil, Lang Son star anise products are still considered to be the best quality products with high essential oil content. The annual star anise output of Lang Son accounts for 87.5% of the country's output.

Not only star anise, Vietnam is also one of the major exporters of many popular spices such as pepper, cinnamon... By March 2023, our country will have 500,000 hectares of spice crops, with hundreds of thousands of small-scale farming households and about 400 businesses in the industry.

Vietnam has been the world leader in pepper production and export for over 20 years. Vietnam's cinnamon exports have also been the world's leading since 2022 and the world's third-largest star anise exporter. Vietnam's pepper and spices are now exported to more than 125 countries, ranking third in global spice exports and dominating many important markets.
