With IELTS 4.5-5.0/9.0, candidates can be converted into 7 to 9 points in English when applying for university admission.
About 100 universities have announced their admission methods for 2024, many of which will continue to use international language certificates for combined admission. Candidates' certificate scores will be converted, then added to the scores of two high school graduation exams or their transcripts. The quota allocated for this method is usually less than 20%.
Each school has its own IELTS English certificate conversion level. Currently, there are two schools that convert IELTS from 4.5: the University of Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University and Ho Chi Minh City Technical Education University.
At the University of Information Technology, with the graduation exam score method, candidates with IELTS 4.5 will be given 8 points in English. Candidates will be given 10 points in this subject if they have IELTS 6.0 or higher.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education converts IELTS 4.5 into 7.5 points in English, applying to priority admission methods, considering academic records and considering graduation exam scores.
Meanwhile, most schools only accept IELTS certificates from 5.0 or 5.5 with a conversion rate ranging from 7-9. For example, at the University of Economics and Law, Ho Chi Minh City National University, candidates with IELTS 5.0 are considered to have 7 English points.
Foreign Trade University is the only school that converts IELTS scores to 6.5 or higher. Candidates must achieve IELTS 8.0 to be awarded 10 points in English. Meanwhile, most other schools give 10 points if they have IELTS 7.5 or higher. In general, the way schools calculate IELTS conversion scores is similar to last year.
The conversion rate of IELTS to English subject score in 2024 of some universities is as follows:

In addition, many universities give bonus points to candidates with IELTS certificates .
Cryptography Academy only considers admission based on high school graduation exam scores. The school does not convert but gives priority points to candidates with IELTS 5.5 or higher. The added points range from 1.5 to 2.5 points, an increase of 0.5 points compared to last year.
When directly admitting candidates from the national excellent student competition team and students from specialized schools, Hanoi National University of Education adds 1 to 3 priority points for those with IELTS from 6.5.
Some schools have not announced their enrollment plans this year but plan to continue to prioritize admission for candidates with international language certificates, such as Hanoi Medical University.

The combination of high school graduation exam scores or transcripts with international language certificates was included in the 2017 enrollment plan by some schools, and has gradually become more popular since 2018. From only economic schools, by 2023, about 100 schools, including technical, police, and medical schools, will use these certificates in enrollment.
As the first school to use IELTS and international language certificates in admissions, the National Economics University said this helps the school select many quality candidates.
Many experts also believe that IELTS or other international language certificates comprehensively assess candidates in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, instead of just testing reading and writing skills like the high school graduation exam. The international certificate test also helps assess the critical thinking, analysis and synthesis skills and presentation skills of candidates. Therefore, the results of this test, when considered with a number of other criteria, are suitable for many schools to recruit students.
In 2022, among more than 500,000 new students, the admission rate by international certificate methods is 0.86%.
It is expected that from March, many schools will announce their admission plans. Candidates need to learn the details of each admission method to understand the conditions and registration time. Some schools will consider early admission for candidates with international language certificates such as IELTS.
