"The maximum wind speed near the center of the storm was 42 meters per second when it made landfall. Typhoon Bebinca also surpassed Typhoon Gloria and became the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Shanghai since 1949," China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

Xinhua News Agency quoted a notice from the Shanghai Meteorological Observatory as saying that Bebinca, the 13th typhoon in China this year, made landfall in Shanghai at around 7:30 a.m. this morning, September 16 (local time).

Bebinca is said to be the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai in 75 years, according to Xinhua. Shanghai is rarely directly affected by the powerful typhoons that often hit southern China. Typhoon Yagi , which was devastating, swept through southern China's Hainan province last week.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled from Shanghai's two airports since the evening of September 15, and Shanghai Railway Station has suspended some rail services, Reuters reported. The disruptions come as China celebrates a three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

Resorts in Shanghai, including Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Theme Park and Shanghai Wildlife Park, have been temporarily closed and many ferries have also stopped operating.

China's state flood control and drought relief headquarters on September 15 activated a level-4 emergency response for Anhui Province, raising the response level in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province to level-3, according to Xinhua.
