Recently, there have been many serious accidents caused by children learning to make fireworks following instructions on the internet. Photo of a doctor examining a patient after surgery - Photo: VIET DUC HOSPITAL

Previously, a 13-year-old boy named HVD (in Binh Tan district, Vinh Long province) was taken to the emergency room in a state of panic; his right hand was burned black, bleeding, and his finger joints were crushed due to homemade firecrackers.

According to D., he watched video clips online teaching how to make fireworks from matchsticks and did it many times.

On the fifth attempt, before lighting the fire, an explosion occurred. At this time, family members heard a loud bang and ran in. They saw D. holding his burnt hand in a pool of blood, so they took him to the hospital for emergency treatment.

The emergency team from the trauma and orthopedics department of Can Tho Children's Hospital promptly performed emergency surgery to initially treat the wound, washing, cleaning the wound, removing foreign objects, and treating soft tissue injuries...

The second time the doctors continued the surgery to try to keep the remaining part of the hand, creating a flap of skin to cover the tendons and between the fingers, and inserting screws to fix the bone.

Currently, after surgery to reconstruct the hand wound, it is stable, fingers 4 and 5 have recovered, the patient is discharged from the hospital and scheduled for a follow-up visit to continue rehabilitation of the hand and fingers.

Doctor Nguyen Quang Tien, head of the trauma and orthopedics department at Can Tho Children's Hospital, said that injuries caused by firecrackers are often very complicated, making treatment and recovery very difficult; most cases require multiple surgeries followed by rehabilitation, leaving serious sequelae, even permanent loss of function.

In the case of baby D., luckily his hand can still grasp things and his finger functions have recovered, but the mental trauma will remain with him for the rest of his life.

"We hope that families and schools need to educate, guide and warn children about the risks of learning from video clips on the internet, especially that making homemade fireworks, homemade guns or other weapons is a violation of the law," said Dr. Tien.
