After 2 years of support from the Alive & Thrive Project, the Provincial General Hospital has effectively implemented the practice of breastfeeding. Accordingly, it has excellently achieved the following targets: 80% of normal births, 50% of cesarean births have skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding; 95% of normal births do not separate mother and child; 80% of cases receive breastfeeding counseling support; 90% of cases of children are exclusively breastfed while in the hospital; there are no cases of formula feeding; 100% of staff in the obstetrics department have certificates of breastfeeding practice...
To achieve that result, the hospital organized each medical staff to be a communications officer; used leaflets, pictures, and posters for on-site propaganda; integrated communications for family members in weekly patient council meetings in the obstetrics department; turned on the TV to continuously broadcast media images for family members; established a "breastfeeding support" group...
For the hospital room, there is 1 kangaroo room with 4 specialized beds, complete with charts and documents regulating the assessment of the breastfeeding environment, and full equipment to support, preserve, and express milk when the baby is not yet breastfed.
During the time the baby is in neonatal intensive care, the mother is always encouraged to visit the baby, and is advised on how to express milk and exclusively breastfeed. Through good breastfeeding practices, the baby responds well to treatment; stabilizes body temperature, breathing rate, digestive symptoms; increases mother-child affection; and reduces treatment costs.
