Truong Sa Island Infirmary successfully treated a fisherman who suffered a stroke at sea.

Patient Nguyen Van Lai was taken to Truong Sa Island Infirmary, Truong Sa Special Zone, for emergency treatment in a conscious state, able to communicate but with paralysis on the right side of his body, slurred speech, crooked mouth, and high blood pressure.

On August 25, while exploiting seafood in the Truong Sa sea area, Mr. Nguyen Van Lai (born in 1969, hometown Binh Son commune, Quang Ngai province, crew member of fishing boat QNg 90640 TS) suddenly experienced symptoms of fatigue, numbness and weakness in the right side of the body, difficulty speaking, and headache.

At about 11:00 a.m. the same day, the patient was taken by a fishing boat to the Truong Sa Island Infirmary, Truong Sa Special Zone, Khanh Hoa Province for emergency treatment in a conscious state, able to communicate but with paralysis on the right side of the body, slurred speech, crooked mouth, and high blood pressure of 161/90 mmHg.

Through examination and diagnosis, doctors determined that the patient had a stroke, right hemiplegia due to cerebral infarction at the 11th hour, and needed to be closely monitored to differentiate it from cerebral hemorrhage.

Doctors on the island quickly performed intravenous fluids, protected brain cells, prevented cerebral edema, and controlled blood pressure; performed measures such as electrocardiogram, X-ray, and other tests, and held an online consultation with Military Hospital 175 in Ho Chi Minh City to come up with an appropriate treatment regimen.

According to the initial assessment, the patient's injuries are severe, with a risk of progressive stroke and cerebral edema. Currently, the military medical staff on Truong Sa Island continue to closely monitor the patient's perception, vital signs, and hemodynamic status to promptly report to the higher level for appropriate treatment.

The Navy Region 4 Command said that the timely rescue of fisherman Nguyen Van Lai once again affirmed the sense of responsibility, affection and companionship of the military medical team on Truong Sa island and the infirmaries in Truong Sa Special Zone in supporting and accompanying fishermen to go out to sea, stick to the sea, contributing to protecting the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland./.
