Miaowan Island is located in the middle of the Jiapeng Island chain in the Wanshan Archipelago, southeast of Zhuhai City, about an hour by high-speed train from Guangzhou.

The small island is only 1/3 the size of the Summer Palace, the famous summer palace in Beijing with an area of ​​nearly 6,000 hectares. There is a legend about the sea god, because he blessed the people on the island with an inexhaustible source of fresh water.

In fact, the island has its own water filtration system, a 500-meter long sandbank in Ha Phong Bay. Interestingly, this sandbank was not formed by the rocks on the island. The rocks on the island are mainly granite, the main components are quartz, feldspar, mica. While the main component of the sandbank is limestone, a type of rock that has the effect of filtering water. So where does this limestone come from?

Not far from the island is a sea area containing many dead creatures. They are a great source of limestone for the island. Every day, the sea water erodes the dead sea creatures, depositing sand on the island. The sand here is extremely fine, a few dozen percent smaller than normal sand.

Seawater seeps through layers of fine sand. During this process, salt and other minerals adhere to the limestone in the sand, leaving behind only fresh water. That is why the island, dubbed the Maldives of China, is always full of fresh water.
