During an interview with the press, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib outlined a number of priorities and programs during Belgium's presidency, which will start on January 1, 2024 and last for six months.

This will be the 13th time in the history of European cooperation that Belgium chairs the EU Council of Ministers meetings and all preparatory meetings.

Belgian Prime Minister De Croo stressed that the conflict in Ukraine, the resurgent conflict in the Middle East, climate change, and misinformation will be prominent topics discussed.

During its Presidency, Belgium affirms that it will work to better protect European citizens, cooperate more closely and prepare Europeans for a common future.

These priorities are reflected in key areas such as the rule of law, the Green Deal and boosting competitiveness, Europe's asylum and migration issues, and Europe's position on the international stage.

Belgium's EU presidency coincides with the end of the current legislative body and the elections of a new European Parliament and Commission.

According to the Belgian Prime Minister, the country still has about 150 files to complete. Brussels will strive to pass the strategic program for 2024-2029, as well as prepare for debates on EU reforms to adapt to the bloc's enlargement.
