Boarding meals nurture dreams

Early morning in Thu Lum commune (Lai Chau province), when the mist still lingers on the kitchen roofs, the smell of new rice gently wafts from the kitchen of Ka Lang Secondary School.

That scent not only reminds passersby of abundance, but also shows the spirit and responsibility of the teachers and staff here in nurturing and nurturing dreams and green shoots for the borderland at the upper reaches of the mother river Da Giang.

Thu Lum border commune - where the Da River flows into Vietnam, is home to the Ha Nhi and La Hu ethnic groups. After the administrative reorganization, some schools still keep their old names. The Party Committee, the government, especially those who work on "sowing letters" in the upper Da River always attach importance to taking care of students.

According to the school leaders, Ka Lang Secondary School has 243 students, of which 153 are boarders. For many students, the podium is a place to nurture aspirations, and those warm fires are where dreams are gradually formed through addition and subtraction.

In the warm kitchen, Mr. Nong Van Tuong, Vice Principal of the school said: Eating well is important, eating safely is even more important. We pay great attention to this issue, from input materials, processing procedures, kitchen utensils, even the students' mealtimes are taken care of scientifically and effectively, helping the students not only consider the school as their home but also as a place they love.

Looking at the daily food board, at Ka Lang, students' meals are built according to the weekly menu, ensuring nutritional balance, suitable for their age. Every day, the menu board is made public, hung in an easy-to-see place for parents to monitor. Sample food boxes are kept according to regulations.

Ms. Chu Lo De, a cook, said: “I myself have children studying here, so cooking for them is like cooking for my family. Everyone here has the same mindset, we treat all the children as our own.”

The dedication of the chefs is shown not only through cooking but also in their love for the students in the highlands. The growing area behind the school kitchen, with all kinds of vegetables such as mustard greens, water spinach, kohlrabi... grown by teachers and students. Little hands weed, water, pick vegetables, study and play at the same time, turning labor into joy. Harvested vegetables enrich the boarding meals. Ka Lang Secondary School also teaches life skills, helping students understand the value of clean food.

Lunchtime, the clinking of bowls and chopsticks, the cheerful laughter, the supervisor’s reminders, and especially the lovely, unison invitations of children to eat resound. Lu Go Hoa, a student of class 7A1, said: “I really like going to school because here I have teachers and friends. The school meals are both delicious and fun…”.

Periodically, the school organizes health checks for cooking staff, regularly updating knowledge on food hygiene and safety. In each training session, medical staff remind of seemingly simple principles: Wash hands with soap, use separate cutting boards for raw and cooked food, and store at the right temperature. Thanks to that seriousness, responsibility, and love, Ka Lang Secondary School has never had an incident related to food safety. And also from this school, this kitchen, many "dreams" have taken flight.

The kitchen of a seemingly small school is not small at all. Coming, listening, and feeling, we understand - to "incubate the dreams" of the students here, not only blackboards and chalk are needed, but also meals filled with responsibility and love.
