Born and raised at the foot of Bai Tho Mountain, on the shore of Ha Long Bay, musician Xuan Nhat, Head of the Vietnam Musicians Association of Quang Ninh province, has always had a passion for songs about the sea, islands, borders and border soldiers, spreading melodies and lyrics, contributing to praising and building a beautiful and rich homeland and country.
Talking about this creative field, musician Xuan Nhat shared:
+ Since I was a border guard in Cua Ong, I have also enthusiastically participated in the cultural and artistic movements of the unit. After that, my passion for music became even more intense when I heard singers sing songs about Quang Ninh. After working at the Quang Ninh Literature and Arts Association, I had many opportunities with my friends and soldiers to spend many days wandering around the islands of Quang Ninh to compose. I love the sea very much and it seems to be the main part of my compositions.
- Can the musician name a few songs in that main composition area?
+ A lot. There are easily dozens of songs about the sea and islands in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong , Thanh Hoa such as: "The gateway to the West", "Quan Lan forest wharf this afternoon", "The flying swallows", "Ha Long city", "Do Son I'm waiting for", "Co To girl", "Ha Long legend", "Electricity to the island", "Singing rock in Thien Cung cave", "Island far from the sea of memories", "Youth on the sea of the homeland" and most recently "The Sea, the Waves and You" ...
- Speaking of borders, besides seas and islands, we cannot help but mention works about land borders?
+ That's right. I have written about the border region with songs like: "Singing in the Border Forest", "Border Lullaby", "Border Post", "By the Border Fire", "Waiting for You, the Border Girl". I also have many other songs written about Mong Cai, Binh Lieu, the most recent one about Po Hen...
- It can be said that compositions about the sea and islands of Quang Ninh have created a traditional flow. As the Head of the Vietnam Musicians Association of Quang Ninh province, what is your assessment of this issue?
+ There was a time when many Central musicians came to Quang Ninh to compose and later many of them became big names in the country's music industry. They were not born and raised in Quang Ninh but they laid a solid foundation for the musical development of this land. Many of them had good compositions about the sea and islands of Quang Ninh such as: Musician Hoang Quy with "Moonlit Night on Ha Long Bay", musician Tran Chung with "On the Northeast Sea and Sky", musician Nguyen Cuong with "Ho Bien", "Mai Lang Bien", "Toi Ve Day Nghe Song" and "Du Thuyen On Ha Long Waves", musician Tan Huyen with "Ha Long Night", musician Xuan Giao with "Binh Minh Ha Long", musician Duc Minh with "Xon Xao Song Nuoc Van Don" and "Chieu Ha Long", musician Vu Thiet with "Khuc Truong Ca Bien" and "Loi Song Hat" (both songs were based on poems by poet Trinh Cong Loc)...
Near the This, Quang Ninh composers have achieved much success. When Expressing the theme of sea and islands in many diverse forms along with rich artistic exploration such as songs song “Nostalgia for the distant sea” and “Memories of the sea” by musician Vu Viet Hong, “Sea pillar” by musician Do Hoa An, “Rain from the sea” by musician The Phung, “Night on the island” by musician Le Nguyen Them...
I am also honored, along with musicians Le Nguyen Them and Do Hoa An, to have a work printed in the collection of 100 songs about Vietnam's seas and islands published by Dihavina Music Publishing House. Musician Le Dang Ve has a work "From Ha Long dreaming about Thang Long" printed in the collection of 1,000 years of Thang Long. Musician Vu Viet Hong released the DVD "East Sea Rising Waves" and the album "Ha Long Early". Some musicians from Quang Ninh were sent to Truong Sa to compose, others have works that won music awards such as: The song "Mother Au Co's Sea" by musician Vu Duc Tao won an encouragement prize from the Vietnam Musicians Association, the song "Youth on the Homeland Sea" by musician Xuan Nhat won third prize in the "Here is Vietnam's Sea" contest, "Sea Pillar" by musician Do Hoa An won an A prize from the Vietnam Musicians Association.
- Dear musician, writing about the theme of sea and islands seems to be a strength of Quang Ninh musicians?
+ In Quang Ninh, musicians are more sensitive and easily moved by this topic because Quang Ninh province has a large sea and many islands, they have lived and been exposed to this environment for a long time. That is why when writing about the sea and islands, the songs of Quang Ninh musicians do not get mixed up with the compositions of authors throughout the country. Many songs find their own life such as: "Rowing on Ha Long Bay" by musician Do Hoa An, "Ha Long in autumn" and "Keep Ha Long green forever" by Le Nguyen Them... These songs stand out partly because the content of the lyrics is often open and strong, expressing the vastness of the waves such as: "Ha Long sea of memories" by musician Do Hoa An, "Ha Long night" by musician Nguyen Thanh Long...
Some other musicians such as Le Huy Hoa, Ngoc Xuan, Xuan Quang, Ba Quang, Le Chi Phuc, Dang Xuyen also have new experiments with songs written about the sea and islands. Some musicians focus on lyrics and melodies while still updating modernity, processing songs, arranging and harmonizing them in a fast tempo, breathing in new breath, focusing on vibrant rhythms. Perhaps, the openness and richness of the sea and island theme has also led to openness in creative thinking, helping to escape the rut. That is the reason why many works written about the sea and islands in Quang Ninh have stood firm in the current music scene.
- Border islands are the management area of the border guards. So, when writing about border islands, we cannot fail to mention the soldiers in green uniforms, musician?
+ The song "Border Afternoon" by musician Vu Hiep Binh is also a very notable song. The author of the song is Major General, musician Vu Hiep Binh, former Deputy Political Commissar of the Border Guard of Quang Ninh province. He has many valuable works in the treasure trove of songs written about border guards in particular, and the image of soldiers in general. The song "Border Afternoon" was composed in 1999, performed very successfully by People's Artist Thanh Xuan, a son of Quang Ninh, won third prize of the Vietnam Musicians Association and was voted one of the 10 most favorite songs on the theme "Soldiers and revolutionary war". The song is considered a "manifesto" of love for the homeland and the Fatherland in poetry and music.
Also There is another song called "Chieu bien gioi" by musician Duc Mieng along with the song "Quan ho noi dao xa" which he composed on the occasion of Tet in 1980, during a working trip with the Quan ho Ha Bac Folk Song Group on the island line in the Northeast sea of Quang Ninh province. Musician Do Hoa An has "The soldier standing guard on Co To island", musician Vu Duc Tao has "The border soldier going out to sea"...
- Who are the most dedicated people writing about border soldiers in Quang Ninh, musician?
+ Previously, it was Vu Hiep Binh and later Vu Duc Tao. They were all officers and musicians who devoted their whole lives to the border soldiers and the Border Guard Command of Quang Ninh province. Until now, musician Vu Hiep Binh has passed away. Only musician Vu Duc Tao is still diligently composing.
