Tech giants Apple, Google and Meta are under investigation

According to the Financial Times, the European Commission (EC) is reviewing investigations into technology giants such as Apple, Meta or Alphabet's Google.

Tech giants have recently urged President-elect Donald Trump to challenge the European Union's (EU) regulatory oversight of them.

The impact of Mr Trump's tenure was a factor to consider, a source told the Financial Times, while clarifying that the billionaire's victory was not the reason the EC reopened the investigations.

The EC review could lead to Brussels reducing or changing the scope of the investigations and would cover all cases initiated since March 2024 under the EU's landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA), the Financial Times reported.

The DMA is one of the strictest laws targeting the market dominance of tech giants, regulating what the world's largest tech platforms can or cannot do and imposing fines of up to 10% of a company's annual revenue.

Under the EC's plan, all decisions and potential fines would be suspended until the investigation is completed, but technical work on the cases would continue.

Regulators are now waiting for guidance to make a final decision on the cases of Google, Apple and Meta, sources told the Financial Times.

The DMA comes into effect in 2022 with the aim of curbing the power of "Big Tech" companies and ensuring a level playing field for smaller businesses.

Last week, Meta scrapped its US fact-checking program in one of the biggest overhauls of its approach to moderating political content on its services, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed a desire to mend ties with the incoming Trump administration.

On Monday, Bloomberg News reported that the EU is considering expanding its investigation into whether the social network X of Trump's close friend, Elon Musk, violated content moderation rules.
