On the morning of September 26, the leaders of Kim Ngan commune, Quang Tri province confirmed that they had established an emergency inspection team to handle the case of nearly 20 students of Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School suffering from food poisoning. By 12:30 noon, a total of 40 students had been hospitalized.
Earlier in the morning, a commune leader said, "We mobilized commune vehicles to transport nearly 20 students with symptoms of poisoning to Le Thuy District General Hospital for emergency treatment. In addition, the inspection team also sealed food samples for testing. Professional agencies will check for unusual signs of food preparation at the school to find the cause."
The incident occurred at around 8am on September 26. Many students at this school showed symptoms of vomiting and severe stomach pain after eating breakfast at school. They were given first aid by school medical staff, but their symptoms became more serious, so the commune authorities decided to take them to the hospital.
Initial information said that the students’ breakfast was banh tay, a type of cake made from sticky rice and wrapped in banana leaves. Many students said that some of the cakes had signs of a foul smell.
Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities is located in a mountainous area. The school's students are mainly Van Kieu ethnic children and they have breakfast at school.
