Skin is prone to acne during pregnancy due to hormonal changes - Photo: STOCKSY
Pregnancy, especially for first-time mothers, comes with a lot of confusion about the dos and don'ts during pregnancy.
Misconceptions about skin care can negatively affect pregnant women, according to Channel 10 of WJAR on September 19.
Firstly, there is a long-standing belief that if a mother gives birth to a daughter, she will have a lot of acne and her daughter will steal her beauty. Therefore, many pregnant women have shown quite a bit of anxiety during pregnancy.
It’s true that acne is common, says Erne. For many people, their hormones can change during pregnancy.
This can cause skin changes, such as acne or dark spots. However, this has nothing to do with the sex of the baby.
In addition, having a lot of acne or not also depends on each person's skin care.
Second, many people have skin care habits but are not sure whether they can continue skin care during pregnancy.
The question that expert Erne often encounters is about using cosmetics containing retinol (active ingredient in the retinoid group - has the effect of treating acne, melasma, rejuvenating the skin) and botox (helps reduce wrinkles).
Many people are concerned about using retinol because oral retinoids like Accutane are not approved for use during pregnancy.
However, topical retinol is not absorbed to the same extent through the skin. Therefore, at low levels, it is still possible to continue using cosmetics containing retinol for topical use.
Pregnant women can decide for themselves whether to continue using cosmetics containing retinol or switch to another type, but in general, cosmetics containing retinol are still safe to use during pregnancy.
Ms Erne said that almost no one gets Botox injections during pregnancy. However, there are some cases where people have had Botox injections and then find out they are pregnant and feel scared.
There is evidence that botulism is not caused by botox, but may be caused by food, says Erne. Additionally, botox has no negative effects on infants or breastfeeding.
In general, it is unlikely that anyone would use botox while pregnant or breastfeeding, but there is no data to suggest that botox causes problems during pregnancy.
