Brazilian fans of the two teams fought in the stands of Maracana Stadium, right before the 2026 World Cup qualifying match on the morning of November 22.
According to TyCSports , about 15 minutes before the match, in a corner of the stands, Argentine fans sang the hit song of the 2022 World Cup. Brazilian fans immediately booed in response. After that, the two groups of fans rushed into a fight, throwing objects at each other. The police had to intervene, setting up a barrier between the two sides.

Immediately after the incident, Messi led the Argentina team to the "hot" area to calm the fans. Marquinhos and the Brazilian team also did the same. However, the atmosphere was still tense. Afterwards, the Argentina team left the field and went to the locker room.
After about 20 minutes of the incident, everything was restored. Then the Argentina team returned to the field. The match was delayed by about half an hour from the original scheduled time. The extent of damage to fans on both sides is still unknown.
