The key to success for Vietnamese chess at ASIAD 19

On the evening of October 1, the Vietnamese chess team could not surprise the world's number 1 chess team and host of the 19th Asian Games, China, when they lost in the final match and had to be satisfied with the silver medal. Lai Ly Huynh made mistakes from the opening and could not hold out against his opponent, Zhao Xinxin. Nguyen Hoang Yen could not surprise either and accepted defeat against Wang Linna.

This is a remarkable success of the Vietnamese chess team because the management has thoroughly resolved the personnel issue, choosing the faces considered the best to participate in ASIAD 19. Among them, 2/4 players contributed to the silver medal this time, namely Nguyen Hoang Yen and Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang. Nguyen Hoang Yen won the national championship for 2 consecutive years but was unexpectedly eliminated from the Vietnamese chess team participating in SEA Games 32. Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang also had outstanding achievements but was not appreciated.

Bringing all the best players to participate in ASIAD 19, the Vietnamese chess team started smoothly when they won against Singapore in game 1. In game 2 against China, the Vietnamese team changed the lineup when they replaced Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang with Nguyen Thanh Bao but could not surprise the opponent and accepted defeat. Not discouraged, Lai Ly Huynh and his teammates returned with a victory against Malaysia in game 3, tied with the formidable opponent Hong Kong in game 4 and won against Macau in game 5. This result brought the Vietnamese chess team to second place in the qualifying round, together with the Chinese team (ranked first) to compete again in the final.

Coach Diep Khai Nguyen said the strength of the Vietnamese chess team participating in the 19th ASIAD is the spirit of solidarity and frank discussion when discussing the lineup for each match. "Everyone tried very hard to complete their tasks in their roles, especially discussing the strategy for each individual match," said Coach Diep Khai Nguyen.
