Chiang Mai strengthens livestock protection

Livestock farming in Chieng Mai commune is developing strongly, but also has the potential risk of disease due to erratic weather, increased demand for transportation, trading, and slaughtering. In this situation, Chieng Mai commune has proactively taken many solutions to prevent and control epidemics and protect livestock.

Currently, the whole Chieng Mai commune has over 4,500 buffaloes and cows; over 4,300 goats; over 12,800 pigs; over 201,000 poultry. Since the beginning of the year, the whole commune has recorded an outbreak.   Lumpy skin disease appeared in Hoang Van Thu village 2 and the villages of Mai Khoang, Ang Ung, and Cu village, causing 18 buffaloes and cows to become sick. Thanks to the timely zoning and handling, the infected cases were cured, and the commune declared the end of the epidemic.

Recently, on August 19, African swine fever first broke out in Khieng village and 4 villages: Coi Quynh, Cuom Son, Cu village and Phieng Quai Tong Chinh, causing 151 pigs to get sick, with a total weight of more than 10 tons destroyed, causing an estimated loss of about 500 million VND.

In the face of the possibility of widespread disease spread, Chieng Mai commune has led and directed urgent disease prevention and control for livestock; coordinated with the Regional Agricultural Technical Station VI to isolate, suppress the epidemic, and spray 198 liters of disinfectant chemicals in areas where livestock are infected. At the same time, 950 doses of vaccines against dangerous diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, anthrax, and lumpy skin disease were administered to buffalo and cows. Since the beginning of the year, vaccination has reached about 70% of the total livestock and poultry in the commune.

In addition, the commune directed the villages to organize 40 propaganda sessions integrated into people's meetings, with the following contents: How to recognize and prevent African swine fever, lumpy skin disease, foot and mouth disease, anthrax, rabies in livestock herds... The content was conveyed in many forms, from village loudspeakers, leaflets to direct instructions at livestock households, helping people to easily understand and implement.

As the first village in Chieng Mai commune to detect African swine fever this year, Khieng village has implemented many solutions to control the epidemic, preventing it from spreading widely. Mr. Lo Van Thuan, Party cell secretary and head of Khieng village, informed: From August 19 to now, the whole village has had 67 pigs infected with African swine fever that had to be destroyed, with a total weight of more than 6.3 tons. The village has increased propaganda for people not to hide the epidemic, not to sell sick pigs; to practice biosafety farming, and to regularly clean barns. Currently, most households in the village have given basic vaccinations to their livestock.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Dinh's family in Coi Quynh village is raising 60 pigs. Learning from many outbreaks of livestock diseases, he regularly cleans the livestock area; fully vaccinates, builds biogas tanks to treat livestock waste, both protecting the environment and providing fuel for daily life. Mr. Dinh shared: My family has sprayed disinfectants, sprinkled lime powder, and livestock equipment to ensure proactive and effective disease prevention and control; supplemented food, and increased resistance for livestock. Thanks to that, the family's livestock has developed steadily.

Up to now, Chieng Mai commune has basically controlled the epidemic in livestock herds, but the epidemic situation is still at risk of outbreak due to the possibility of disease from outside. On the other hand, due to the fragmented farming practices, no facility has been granted a certificate of animal disease safety.   There are no full-time veterinary staff, and the staff currently holding multiple positions do not have specialized veterinary expertise.

Mr. Nguyen Hai Son, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Mai commune, informed: We thoroughly follow the motto of disease prevention, and are ready to respond when an epidemic occurs. The People's Committee of the commune directs veterinary staff to stay at the grassroots level, closely monitor livestock, promptly detect and handle any unusual signs. Propagate and advise livestock households not to hide the epidemic, not to sell livestock and poultry without safety confirmation. In the coming time, the commune will promote vaccination work, striving to reach over 90% of the total herd; encourage households to apply biosafety farming, build hygienic barns, and move towards mobilizing farms and concentrated livestock facilities to register for disease-free facility certification.

Currently, entering the season of changing seasons, the erratic weather is a favorable condition for diseases in livestock and pets to arise and spread quickly. Chieng Mai commune propagates and recommends people to vaccinate their livestock; proactively monitor the weather, ensure food sources and regularly clean barns. When detecting any unusual signs, people quickly contact veterinary agencies or local authorities for timely guidance and support to prevent the spread of diseases.

With the strong direction of the Party Committee and the government, the participation of specialized sectors and the proactive awareness of farmers, the work of preventing and fighting epidemics in livestock and poultry in Chieng Mai commune is being implemented synchronously and effectively. This is the basis for the locality to control and prevent epidemics, protect livestock, and maintain stable production and income for the people.
