Russian State Duma Chairman warns the West about nuclear war

Mr. Volodin, who is also a member of the Russian Security Council, gave the above reaction after a vote in the European Parliament calling on European Union (EU) countries to approve this for Kiev.

"Today, the European Parliament calls on EU member states to lift restrictions on Kiev's use of long-range weapons for strikes inside our country, to increase military assistance to Ukraine and to announce a fundraiser for Europeans to meet the needs of the Ukrainian army. What the European Parliament calls for paves the way for a world nuclear war," Volodin wrote on Telegram.

His message was titled "For those who didn't get it the first time" - a reference to President Vladimir Putin's warning last week that the West would go to war with Russia directly if it allowed Ukraine to fire long-range missiles into Russian territory.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has sparked the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, widely seen as the moment when Cold War superpowers the United States and the former Soviet Union came closest to a deliberate nuclear arms race.

Outgoing NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg told the New York Times this week that the Kremlin leader had declared “many red lines” before but did not escalate conflicts with the West when they were crossed. Mr Putin’s spokesman said his comments were dangerous and provocative.

In a non-binding resolution adopted on Thursday, the European Parliament asked EU countries to "immediately lift restrictions on the use of Western weapons systems supplied to Ukraine against legitimate military targets on Russian territory".

"If something like this happens, Russia will react harshly using more powerful weapons. No one should be ambiguous about this," Mr. Volodin wrote. He said Russia believes the West has forgotten the enormous sacrifices the Soviet Union made in World War II.

He further warned that Europeans should understand that Russia's RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, known in the West as Satan II, would take just 3 minutes and 20 seconds to strike Strasbourg, where the European Parliament is meeting.
