Veterans Club for self-management and environmental protection in Yen Khanh neighborhood

Keeping the roads and alleys "bright, green, clean, and beautiful" has become a competitive movement spreading widely throughout residential areas throughout the province. In Yen Khanh quarter, Yen Duc ward (now Hoang Que ward), the model of the Veterans Club self-managing environmental protection (BVMT) has been actively participated by members for nearly 2 years.

In implementing emulation contents in residential areas, such as building cultural life, building new rural areas, civilized urban areas..., environmental criteria are always focused on and considered a difficult task. Because from collecting and treating household waste of each household, from house to alley, preserving the environmental landscape in public places... are very volatile due to depending a lot on the living and production habits of the people. However, this is a very important criterion as it directly affects the quality of health and life of each person. Therefore, implementing core models in residential areas, diversifying forms of propaganda and mobilization on environmental protection work, preserving bright, green, clean and beautiful landscapes always need to be focused on and maintained regularly.

Based on that reality, the Association of War Veterans in Yen Khanh Ward established a Club to participate in self-management of environmental protection, which has been operating for nearly 2 years now. This is a way for members to join hands with local Party committees and authorities to complete and sustainably maintain environmental criteria. Accordingly, every month, the Club will conduct a general cleaning of the main road of the ward. Everyone enthusiastically contributes a working day to clear away bushes, sweep from small alleys to the main road, keeping the appearance of the ward always bright and tidy. All share the same joy and determination to maintain environmental criteria in building a cultural and civilized ward - something that all citizens of the ward are always proud of and strive for.

To build and gradually put the Club into orderly and effective operation, there is no small effort from the Party Cell Secretary, Head of the neighborhood Doan Xuan Nam, who is also a veteran member with many achievements in movements and activities. As a demobilized border guard officer, the 2025-2027 term is the 4th time Mr. Nam has been trusted by the people to take on the role of "locomotive" of the neighborhood. The solution that Mr. Nam and the Party Cell unanimously chose to implement is to rely on the prestige and exemplary actions of the veterans to influence people's awareness and habits towards environmental criteria.

Mr. Nam said: In the past, some people still thought that the responsibility for environmental protection belonged to the government, from investing in human resources to collect and treat waste and wastewater, to investing in technical infrastructure... However, that is not enough. The role of the people as subjects and proactive people is extremely important, they need to take responsibility for protecting their own living environment, in all fields, all professions, at all times, everywhere. Only then can the quality of the environment around us be improved and maintained sustainably.

Veterans Association Chairman Vu Dinh Dien shared: The Veterans Association's monthly environmental cleaning campaign always incorporates propaganda and reminds people to proactively comply with regulations on maintaining hygiene and public safety. Thanks to that, the activities have become a common routine, such as sorting and recycling waste at households, taking care of flowers and trees along residential roads, installing public trash cans, cleaning playgrounds, cultural house grounds, etc. When people understand that these tasks are to protect their health and ensure living conditions for their own families, the spirit of agreement and support is very high. The environment is cleaner, there are no more conflicts and frustrations, and the neighborhood relationship is more firmly cultivated.

The images of exemplary war veterans, who are dedicated to their duty of maintaining peace in the village every day, have become increasingly close and trustworthy to the people of Yen Khanh neighborhood. The story of the enthusiastic and creative participation of war veterans in maintaining environmental sanitation also partly speaks to the competitive spirit, enthusiasm and creativity of Uncle Ho's soldiers when returning to civilian life.
