With a revenue of 22.4 million USD, director Paul Thomas Anderson's action comedy, "One Battle After Another" had an impressive debut when it topped the box office at North American theaters last weekend.
This was a big gamble by Warner Bros., investing more than $130 million for the 170-minute film, based on the appeal of the famous director and star Leonardo DiCaprio.
In this film, actor Leonardo DiCaprio plays a veteran who is drawn back into the action to save his daughter.
The film captivates audiences with its combination of suspenseful scenes, deep emotions, and near-absurd elements, creating a unique cinematic experience.
The New York Times described the film as an epic about good and evil, violence and power, inalienable rights and the fight for justice.
The film simultaneously received many compliments from critics and audiences, and even early predictions of Oscar nominations for both director Anderson and male lead DiCaprio began to appear.
“This is a great start for an action movie,” said David A. Gross, an expert at research firm Franchise Entertainment.
He commented that the work is achieving results on par with the opening part of an action movie series and this is very impressive.
However, with a production and promotion budget of more than 130 million USD, the opening figure of 22.4 million USD may not be enough for the film to quickly break even.
Analysts say the film’s success will depend largely on long-term audience response, word-of-mouth, and awards season. Notably, the film received an “A” CinemaScore, a score that is significantly higher than Anderson’s previous films such as “Boogie Nights” and “Punch-Drunk Love.”
In second place is the family film “Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie” (Vietnamese title: “Ngoi nhà sữa đá của Gabby”) produced by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, earning 13.7 million USD. The work is based on the hit animated series on Netflix, revolving around the character Gabby and her amazing journey in her dollhouse.
The hit Japanese anime film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle” (Vietnamese title: “Demon Slayer”) held the third place when it earned an additional 7.1 million USD, bringing its total revenue in the North American market to 118.2 million USD.
