Da Nang: Boarding students have to eat and sleep in other classes, parents are upset

TPO - "My child told me that when it was time to eat, he had to go to another class to eat. Sometimes, his friends told him to go back to his class to eat. Not to mention the conflicts and disagreements because the children were still young," said a parent whose child studied at Dinh Bo Linh Primary School (Da Nang City).

Parents of children studying in class 5/5 at Dinh Bo Linh Primary School said that this school year, the class has 30 students, of which 25 are registered as boarding students. However, the school does not organize a separate boarding class for class 5/5 but divides the students into the other four classes. At mealtime, the 25 students have to go to eat and sleep with students from other classes.

“There was a day when my children were told to go to their class to eat. It was crowded and noisy during bedtime, so I couldn’t sleep,” one parent said indignantly. Parents were also worried because the children were still young, so having them go to another class to board could affect their psychology, not to mention the conflicts and fights that could arise.

According to parents, last year, the class size was the same but the school still organized separate boarding classes for the class. This year, when parents learned that their children's classes were divided, they protested and the school explained that the homeroom teacher was not healthy enough to organize boarding. Therefore, the school only registered 20 boarding classes with the ward, and now it cannot add another class. As for grade 5, class 5/5 has the fewest students registered for boarding, so it must be separated.

“If the teachers are not healthy enough, the school can hire a caretaker. Our children go to school and pay fees like their friends. Why are the benefits unfair? It is better to have only 5 or 7 students registered for boarding school in a class. If the number is too small, we can accept dividing them up. But in this case, there are 25/30 students,” the parent analyzed.

What does the school say?

Speaking to Tien Phong, Ms. Phan Thi Tam, Vice Principal of the school, confirmed that the 5/5 class students were divided into smaller groups to organize boarding. According to her, the registration for boarding depends on the needs and conditions of each student and family. Parents also want both homeroom teachers and administrators to accompany them during boarding hours.

This year, the homeroom teacher of class 5/5 is not healthy enough to organize a separate boarding class for the class. The school has divided the 25 students in this class into 4 other classes in grade 5. However, the parents do not agree. "The school has met and worked with the parents, but they still do not agree, so the school has asked the ward's opinion to be able to open an additional boarding class for students of class 5/5. It is expected to be implemented on September 15," said Ms. Tam.

The school’s Vice Principal said that this boarding class does not have a homeroom teacher, but will be managed by another teacher. She added that in addition to class 5/5, other grades also have classes that do not organize boarding. In case parents have any comments, the school will work with them to find a suitable solution to ensure the rights as well as good learning and living conditions for the children.
