South Korean opposition party announces impeachment of President Yoon every week

The new move by the Democratic Party (DP) comes days after President Yoon Suk-yeol avoided the first impeachment threat.

Last weekend, the South Korean National Assembly rejected the Democratic Party's (DP) impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol over his decision to impose martial law, thanks to the ruling People Power Party (PPP) voting against impeachment.

Following the above results, the DP announced that it will push for the impeachment of Mr. Yoon every week.

Like the first move, the DP cited the reason for impeaching Mr. Yoon as related to his declaration of martial law on December 3. The opposition said that this action of the South Korean President violated both the Constitution and the country's laws.

The DP will bring the proposal to a plenary session on December 13 and vote at 5 p.m. on December 14.

Under South Korean law, an impeachment motion must be voted on by the National Assembly within 24 to 72 hours of being submitted to a plenary session. To pass, the motion needs the support of at least two-thirds of the 300 members of the National Assembly.

Currently, the opposition consists of 192 lawmakers. To impeach the president, the opposition needs the support of eight of the 108 PPP lawmakers.

As of December 12, seven PPP lawmakers have publicly voiced their support for Yoon's impeachment.

The National Assembly Secretariat said it plans to restrict outsiders' access to the National Assembly during the impeachment proceedings on December 13 and 14.

"All events involving outsiders within the Parliament premises will also be banned," the Parliament Secretariat announced, adding that only those with staff cards or access passes will be allowed to enter the Parliament building.
