What is the 'winning door' for Vietnamese agriculture?

Vietnam's agriculture ranks in the top 15 in the world in terms of export turnover, but still faces the adversity of "good harvest, low prices" or the situation of "rescuing agricultural products". So what is the leverage for Vietnamese agriculture to "turn the tables" in the global game?

Editor-in-chief, businesswoman Dang Huynh Uc My shared at the book launch seminar on September 27.

At the book launch event "Right to Win - 'Winning Door' of Vietnamese Agriculture : How AgriS and Betrimex Participate in the Global Supply Chain", many experts discussed ways for Vietnamese agriculture to move towards sustainable development in the context of an increasingly demanding global market, from quality standards to green barriers.

The book is edited by businesswoman Dang Huynh Uc My, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of AgriS (Thanh Thanh Cong - Bien Hoa Joint Stock Company) and Betrimex ( Ben Tre Import-Export Joint Stock Company).

ESG is no longer just a "passport"

Ms. My said that agriculture - the pillar that feeds nearly 100 million people and is Vietnam's "soft passport" in global negotiations on climate, environment, and food security - has not yet been recognized as worthy on the international stage.

Vietnam has products, people, and land, but needs a strong enough capacity framework to stand firm in the global game.

Citing her perspective from the recently released book, Ms. My believes that the first lesson when going out to sea is to learn how to price your own quality correctly, not to lower it compared to Thailand or Brazil. The issue is not only quality but also hitting the right price - the right channel, the right market, the right buyer - so that Vietnamese products are paid a fair price.

"The key to victory is not in producing more, but in producing smarter, demonstrated through high-tech agriculture and ESG as the operating system that helps Vietnamese businesses connect with the global market and access green capital," Ms. My emphasized.

Accordingly, AgriS and Betrimex introduced the "3C" operating model to respond to the circular economic model with agriculture. The model focuses on 3 pillars: the agricultural center (AgriC - Agriculture Center) acts as an "agronomic compass", the production center (ProC - Production Center) acts as a value-enhancing link and the commercial center (ComC - Commercial Center) is the gateway to connect with the global market.

From another perspective, according to Mr. Tran Ngoc Nguyen - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ca Mau Petroleum Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, to penetrate large markets (USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand), Vietnamese enterprises must follow ESG and reduce emissions. This is considered a binding treaty for all enterprises that want to participate globally.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan - Director of the Institute for Circular Economic Development (ICED) - said that the unique feature of Vietnamese agriculture is that it can take advantage of the country's strengths with abundant raw materials and diverse climate.

However, this strength can only be promoted when technology is integrated, waste is processed into standard organic fertilizer, deep processing for export, or traceability is applied using digital platforms.

ESG investing will continue to grow

Mr. Jonathan Goh - Vice President of Morgan Stanley Investment Bank - said that current global policies are shaping capital flows based on sustainable business performance.

“Investors no longer see ESG as a ‘plus’ but as an essential component in every decision. ESG-focused companies often manage risks better, innovate more effectively, and thereby create superior value,” said Mr. Goh.

Mr. Jonathan cited the latest data showing that there are currently $2.8 trillion in assets under management in sustainable funds, up 12% since the beginning of this year alone. Of which, about 90% of global investors said they will continue to increase the proportion of ESG investments in the coming year.

However, green capital is still mainly used by large-scale companies because establishing a framework, monitoring and accurate reporting requires a large amount of resources and capacity.

From the perspective of accessing green capital, he recommended that Vietnamese enterprises need to focus on strengthening three capacities: an ESG operating framework in accordance with current laws; a performance monitoring system to review and monitor activities over time according to global ESG standards; and a measurement system and the ability to demonstrate capacity to foreign investors to access green capital.

According to experts, the "winning door" of Vietnamese agriculture has many keys. In that process, the coordination of many related parties is needed to bring Vietnamese agriculture closer to the global market.

Đâu là

“Right to Win - 'Winning Door' of Vietnamese Agriculture” is expected to be a valuable reference publication, creating intellectual momentum to promote Vietnamese agriculture.

The book Right to Win: The Winning Door of Vietnamese Agriculture records the experiences of businesswoman Dang Huynh Uc My and the AgriS - Betrimex team in the journey of bringing Vietnamese sugarcane and coconut products to the global supply chain.

One of the outstanding results mentioned is that the success of AgriS and Betrimex lies not only in export value, but more importantly in building a sustainable position for two Vietnamese agricultural products in the world market.

At the same time, analyze how to integrate ESG from strategic roots to corporate operating culture - going beyond the reports or indexes that these two businesses have applied in their journey to conquer the international market, thereby proposing solutions and directions to lead and connect with the Vietnamese agricultural industry in general.
