Benchmarks drop sharply, possibly up to 3 points

Evaluating this year's exam scores, Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, a teacher at Thu Duc High School, said that for Math, the number of scores greater than 5 decreased significantly compared to last year. The number of candidates with excellent scores decreased significantly. The score distribution chart for Math this year also has differences and shows that students have difficulty with this subject, consistent with the reality reported by the press. For Literature and English, the score distribution this year and last year are similar.

Mr. Tuan Anh predicts that this year's benchmark scores will decrease and decrease significantly at top schools. As for lower-ranked schools, the benchmark scores may or may not decrease, or even increase. However, this depends on the candidates' registration wishes, besides the score around 5 does not fluctuate much.

Mr. Do Duc Anh, a Literature teacher, said that this year most schools increased their quotas, so the benchmark scores may have decreased. On the other hand, there was no rain of 10s in English, the Math scores were not good, while the Literature scores were not outstanding. Therefore, the benchmark scores will decrease and may decrease by as much as 3 points.

Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School, commented that the general average score of the 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City this year was lower than last year, especially in Math when more than 50% of candidates scored below average. Meanwhile, the number of candidates with below average scores was concentrated at 2 and 3 points. The number of candidates with above average scores was also not high, mainly at 5.5 to 6.25. Thus, it is clear that this year's Math scores are very low compared to 2023.

For English, more than 70% of the candidates were above average, but the score range was concentrated around 7 and 8, without the phenomenon of a shower of 10s like in 2023. For Literature, more than 80% of the candidates were above average, but the score range was mostly between 6 and 7, with very few high scores.

Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu said that this year's score distribution is lower than 2023. In particular, the number of students who scored 23 or higher is only over 11,000 students. If over 98,000 candidates are allocated to take the exam, the benchmark scores of the top schools this year will decrease by 1-2 points. The middle-ranking schools will decrease by 2-3 points. And the lower-ranking schools will have the phenomenon of students with 10-11 points also passing the exam.

Mr. Phu advised that candidates now know their scores so they should stay calm. If they feel that their test scores do not match their ability, they should file a request for review. When the Department of Education and Training announces the benchmark scores, if you pass any of your wishes, you should study that wish. If you do not pass any of your wishes, you should find another school to study, which could be a continuing education center, a private school, or a vocational school. However, it is also possible to expect the Department to recruit additional candidates in the second round like in 2023, giving more opportunities to study at public schools.
