A bright spot of a cooperative

By effectively exploiting turmeric on difficult land, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh, in Tan Thanh residential group, Bac Kan ward, has increased the income of many members in the cooperative, reaching an average of 7 million VND/person/month. Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative, founded by her, has been commended by many levels and sectors, contributing to spreading the effectiveness of agricultural production and the patriotic emulation movement in the period of 2020-2025.

In a small house in Tan Thanh residential group, the story of starting a business from turmeric of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh and her husband has become the pride of the community here, where 90% of the population are ethnic minorities. Stemming from the determination to escape poverty, they have built a new collective economic model, connecting hundreds of households to work together for development.

Established in 2017 with only 10 members, Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative has now expanded to 428 members, of which more than 60% are poor, near-poor or newly escaped poverty households, mainly ethnic minorities.

From an initial area of ​​only a few hectares, the cooperative has developed an organic turmeric growing area of ​​over 135 hectares, with an annual output of 5,000-7,000 tons of fresh turmeric.

This raw material is processed into more than 20 diverse products, including red glutinous rice turmeric starch, premium black glutinous rice turmeric starch, honey turmeric pills, dried turmeric slices, ginger powder, cinnamon, black plum and dried bamboo shoots.

In particular, the two high-quality red glutinous rice turmeric starch and black glutinous rice turmeric starch products of the Cooperative have been recognized as meeting the 4-star OCOP standard, becoming typical products. These products have gradually conquered demanding markets, while affirming the prestige and brand of local agricultural products.

In the 2020-2025 period alone, Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative was honored to receive 18 certificates of merit from ministries, branches and the Provincial People's Committee, along with many prestigious awards, such as: National Outstanding Cooperative; National Outstanding Rural Industrial Product and "Mai An Tiem" award.

The unit has also been honored as "Golden Brand of Vietnamese Agriculture", and has won the title of "Outstanding Rural Industrial Product" many times. These awards demonstrate the spirit of competition, creativity and continuous efforts of all members in building and developing the Cooperative.

Not only expanding production, the cooperative also creates regular jobs for 72 local workers, and cooperates with hundreds of households to consume products. The average income reaches 7 million VND/person/month, surpassing the average level of rural mountainous areas, contributing significantly to sustainable poverty reduction.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh, Director of the Cooperative, shared: Coming from difficulties, we understand that people really need a stable output. Therefore, from the beginning, the goal of the Cooperative was not only to do business, but more importantly, to create conditions for long-term development for the people. Today's achievements are thanks to the consensus of the collective and the support from the government and all levels of the industry.

The joy is clearly shown through each household. Mr. Trieu Huu Quan, a member of the cooperative, said: "Before, we only grew corn and rice, with unstable income. Joining the cooperative, receiving technical guidance and having a stable output, my family earns tens of millions of dong each year."

Ms. Hoang Thi Diep, a worker at the processing facility, shared: I have been working here for 3 years, with a stable income of about 7 million VND/month. The most precious thing is that I have a job right in my hometown, which allows me to take care of my family and have the opportunity to stay long-term.

Along with economic development, the Cooperative actively participates in social activities such as supporting the Fund for the Poor, supporting people in disaster areas and contributing to the construction of new rural areas. This economic model is closely linked to community responsibility, spreading positive values ​​in the locality.

Thanks to the methodical approach, turmeric has become a key product, contributing to expanding the market for Thai Nguyen agricultural products, while creating a driving force for economic development and spreading the spirit of patriotic emulation. The success of Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative led by Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh has helped improve people's lives, while demonstrating the effectiveness of innovation efforts and the spirit of overcoming difficulties in mountainous areas.
