New developments in the case of a credit card owner suddenly losing millions of dong at midnight

(NLDO) - The bank announced that it will refund two cases of credit card holders who suddenly lost millions of dong without making any transactions.

On the afternoon of February 5, Mr. NHT and Ms. TTTH (both living in Ho Chi Minh City) - the credit card owners in the article "Credit card owner suddenly lost millions of dong at midnight even though there was no transaction", Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper on February 4 - said they had just received a notice from the bank that they would be refunded.

According to Mr. NHT, the bank where he opened his account has just announced that it will refund the money lost in his international credit card account (debit) in the next few days. Previously, Mr. T. said that on the night of January 31 and the early morning of February 1, his credit card account continuously notified him of deductions from internet transactions with the content "Outgoing money".

Because each transaction deducted a small amount (VND 25,275), he did not register for SMS Banking service so he did not receive a message notifying him of the transaction. The transactions took place from about 10:55 p.m. on January 31 to 4:55 a.m. on February 1 (the 3rd and 4th days of Tet), so he did not know. On the morning of February 1, when checking on the digital banking application, he discovered that his account had generated 1,160 transactions, worth nearly VND 29 million.

The customer's credit card generated up to 1,160 payment transactions abroad on the night of the third day of Tet.

Similarly, Ms. TTTH said that on January 31 (the third day of Tet), her card account suddenly had 5 foreign currency payment transactions abroad with the same amount of 179.8 USD. In total, 5 transactions, her account was deducted nearly 900 USD (nearly 23 million VND). These transactions also occurred in the early morning, when she was in Vietnam, did not make any transactions and the credit card was still in her wallet.

"I did not receive any information or OTP code to confirm these transactions. I did not give my card to anyone, rarely used my phone to buy and sell things online, and especially did not buy and sell in foreign currency" - Ms. H. wondered.

Immediately after the incident, cardholders called the hotline to lock the card and waited for the card-issuing bank to verify the transaction.

Regarding the sudden deduction of credit cards due to transactions occurring early in the morning or late at night, some financial experts believe that it is likely that customers' credit card information has been leaked for various reasons.

To avoid revealing credit card information, in addition to security, do not disclose the secret CVV code to anyone, for any reason, banks recommend that when making online payments, cardholders should only transact on websites using the HTTPS security protocol. These websites have a lock icon and an address starting with "https://", ensuring that the data is encrypted and secure. Customers should register to receive notifications when transactions occur for easy control.

In case of suspected card or bank account information disclosure, users must immediately notify the card issuer to immediately block the card. The card can be blocked on the digital banking application; via the bank hotline or at a bank branch or transaction office.
