Behind barbed wire and a heavy security detail, impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol continued to hide in his sprawling hillside mansion with his wife and pets on January 7, as investigators plotted his arrest. The AFP news agency described the mansion as a “fortress”.

Since being impeached and suspended by the National Assembly last month for failing to declare martial law on December 3, Mr. Yoon has stayed at his official residence in Hannam-dong, an upscale area favored by businessmen and celebrities, often referred to as South Korea's "Beverly Hills."

Security forces also blocked the road leading to his residence by using buses to block the way and erecting barbed wire.

“Mr. Yoon is basically hiding in his mansion,” said lawyer Seok Dong-hyeon, a close friend who is in regular contact with Mr. Yoon. Another source also revealed that Mr. Yoon hardly receives visitors other than his lawyers, but “is fine.”

Meanwhile, investigators who want to question him on sedition charges are having difficulty executing an arrest warrant.

The head of the investigation team, who was blocked by hundreds of presidential security and military personnel outside Mr. Yoon’s residence last week, said on January 7 that they were still determined to arrest him.

Since his impeachment, little has been revealed about Mr. Yoon's life, and the security team has taken strong measures to protect the President's privacy.

Last week, his office filed a lawsuit against three television stations and a YouTuber for distributing a video that allegedly showed the First Lady walking a white dog, allegedly filmed secretly in an area designated as a sensitive facility.

Days after his impeachment, Mr. Yoon quietly celebrated his 64th birthday at home. According to Yonhap news agency, supporters sent flowers to his residence, while more than 2,000 letters were delivered to his office. However, his office said it could not confirm the information.
