In some places in Ha Tinh , farmers still keep the habit of burning straw in the fields after harvesting rice.

At this time, in many fields in Ha Tinh, the summer-autumn rice harvest has basically been completed. After the harvest, instead of collecting straw to use as animal feed, compost, etc., some people burn it right in the fields.

Burning straw in fields adjacent to National Highway 1A (section through Cam Thanh commune, Cam Xuyen district) creates clouds of smoke that obscure visibility, posing a danger to traffic participants.

Traveling along National Highway 1A through Cam Xuyen, Thach Ha, Can Loc districts, we saw farmers burning straw in many fields. Burning straw creates towering columns of smoke, polluting the environment. Some fields are located next to the national highway, the smoke spreads out, obscuring the vision of passersby, posing a potential risk of traffic accidents.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Anh (Dong Nam Lo village, Cam Thanh commune, Cam Xuyen) said: “If straw is left in the field, it will be difficult to prepare the land for the next crop. Therefore, people burn straw to make the field better and the soil looser. This will also destroy the source of disease in the production area. My family does not raise livestock and does not use straw, so burning it in the field is convenient.”

Burning straw right in the fields causes many harmful effects.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Anh - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ha Tinh province said: "The practice of burning straw in the fields has become a custom and habit of farmers in some areas. People still believe that this will benefit cultivation. However, this is an act of environmental destruction, the cultivated land is destroyed and degraded, making cultivation not achieve high productivity."

According to agricultural experts, burning straw right in the field will destroy the nutrients of the soil, burning repeatedly and for a long time will cause the soil to deteriorate and become hard, kill beneficial insects, and cause imbalance in the ecological balance of rice fields. This is one of the causes of pest outbreaks in the fields, forcing farmers to use large amounts of pesticides to prevent and control them, thus increasing production costs.

Ha Tinh people need to give up the habit of burning straw in the fields after harvesting rice.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Anh - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ha Tinh province, people should take advantage of the empty land next to the fields to store straw for gradual use such as: covering materials for crops, making feed for livestock, using straw mushrooms or growing vegetables. In addition, people can bury straw in the soil, use biological products to treat it, thereby helping to maintain nitrogen and organic substances in the soil.

Utilizing agricultural waste such as straw in production not only helps reduce costs, increase crop productivity, and return organic resources to the soil, but also contributes to the formation of green and clean agricultural production methods.
