Gia Lai: Construction of runway number 2 at Phu Cat Airport started

(Chinhphu.vn) - On August 19, at Phu Cat Airport, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project to build runway No. 2 and synchronous items, with a total capital of more than VND 3,245 billion. The project is expected to create momentum for the socio-economic, defense and security of the South Central Coast and Central Highlands.

On the morning of August 19, at Phu Cat Airport, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project to invest in building runway No. 2 and synchronous works at the Phu Cat Airport flight area.

The investment project to build runway No. 2 and synchronous works at Phu Cat Airport has a total investment of more than 3,245 billion VND, ensuring the reception of Code C aircraft such as A320, A321 and equivalent.

The project is expected to be constructed in 12 months with the main items: Construction of runway No. 2 (33L-15R) parallel to the existing road, 215m west of the existing road, size (3,048 x 45)m; 4 connecting taxiways, 2 quick-exit taxiways; drainage system including longitudinal ditches, underground sewers, seepage ditches, border ditches and synchronously connected manholes.

In addition, the project will build flight operations assurance systems such as CAT II (head 33R) and CAT I (head 15L) approach lights, sign systems, beacons, lighting, automatic meteorological monitoring, power station buildings and synchronous power supply equipment to serve operations.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tu Cong Hoang affirmed that Phu Cat Airport plays an important role in socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security in the South Central region, Central Highlands and Gia Lai. In recent times, the province has closely coordinated with ministries, branches and airlines to increase flights, promote trade, tourism and attract investment. However, the airport is currently overloaded, the runway is degraded; it is forecasted that by 2030, the demand for travel and transportation will increase sharply, requiring early investment in upgrading infrastructure to meet development needs.

To effectively promote the advantages of location, importance and available potential, Phu Cat Airport needs to be prioritized for synchronous, modern and sustainable investment. After completion, Runway No. 2 will serve both civil and military aviation activities in parallel, contributing to increasing operating capacity, meeting development needs, in accordance with the Phu Cat Airport Planning for the period 2021-2030, vision 2050.
