Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online reporters, many lecturers working at the Vietnam - Korea - Quang Ngai College were upset when mentioning the amount of money owed by the school. In which, overtime teaching fees have been going on since 2015 and recently the school has owed official salaries.

Total debts the school owes to lecturers is about 6.3 billion VND

According to the school’s statistics, the total amount of unpaid wages, overtime pay, etc. is now about 6.3 billion VND. Of which, the school’s unpaid overtime pay for some lecturers has been going on since 2015 and has yet to be paid.

There is a case of a lecturer who owes more than 140 million VND, most of which is overtime money accumulated over many years of teaching.

A lecturer shared: "At that time, my salary was only about 2.2 million VND/month, not enough to live on, so I had to register to teach overtime to earn more income to support my family. Who would have thought that even though I taught, the school still owes me money."

The lecturers who have become "creditors" say that vocational training is not like mere theoretical teaching. They have to practice for many hours with heavy machinery and equipment, and are exposed to many risks related to electricity, mechanics, welding, and cutting.

"No matter how hard it is, we just hope the school pays us our fair share. We are attached to the school, but we need money to support our families," said a lecturer.

In fact, in 2022, the teaching staff sent a complaint to the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province and the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (formerly known as the Quang Ngai Provincial Inspectorate). The Quang Ngai Provincial Inspectorate directed the school to pay for overtime teaching from 2015 to 2021, but it has not been resolved yet.

It is even sadder when lecturers from other units who come to give guest lectures are paid in full, while full-time lecturers working at the school, who are responsible for teaching and managing students, are in debt.

Financial autonomy, unstable income, schools "stuck" with payment

According to the Vietnam - Korea - Quang Ngai College, from 2023 the school will be completely financially autonomous. However, this has put the school in a difficult position when its main source of income, tuition fees, has decreased sharply due to difficulties in recruiting students.

Each year the school is assigned a target of recruiting 950 students, but in reality only reaches about 80% of the plan. This greatly affects the revenue, while the monthly salary and operating costs are more than 1.4 billion VND.

The school currently has 117 staff and workers. However, by the end of July, the school had only paid about 50% of June's salary, and July's salary had not been received yet, and business travel expenses and phone calls had not been paid.

The debt for overtime teaching in 2024 alone has incurred more than 1.3 billion VND. The debt from the period 2015-2018 is more than 936 million VND, and there is still no source to pay.

Receiving the fact that the school owed lecturers for decades, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Giang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province, directed and requested the Department of Education and Training to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Finance and the Department of Home Affairs to inspect and review the entire financial situation and salary arrears of the school, and propose a solution. The deadline for reporting is August 10.

Mr. Vo Dinh Ta, principal of Vietnam - Korea - Quang Ngai College, said that on August 4, the school had a working session with the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Finance to report the situation and propose solutions.

"The proposed direction is available, currently waiting for the department to report to the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province. When it is officially resolved, the lecturers will be notified," said Mr. Ta.

Some lecturers said: "We don't want to make a big deal out of it, we just want to be paid for the effort we put in. Being owed wages, overtime, and overtime for many years has affected the lives and confidence of lecturers."
