Japan Airlines said on December 26 that a cyber attack affected domestic and international flights, but the airline later determined the cause and handled the incident.

NHK said the airline's baggage check system had a problem that affected more than 10 flights at several Japanese airports, but there were no mass cancellations or major disruptions.

Japan Airlines (JAL) is the country's second largest airline after All Nippon Airways (ANA).

"We have identified and resolved the cause of the incident. We are checking the system recovery status. Ticket sales for domestic and international flights departing today have been suspended. We apologize for any inconvenience caused," JAL said on social media X.

AFP quoted a JAL spokesman as confirming the company had been hit by a cyber attack. JAL issued a statement saying the network disruption began at 7:24 a.m. on December 26. Then, at 8:56 a.m., the airline temporarily isolated a device that was exchanging data between networks that caused the disruption.

JAL shares fell as much as 2.5% in morning trading after the news broke, before recovering slightly.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said in 2023 that it had been hacked by an unknown actor, but no sensitive information about its rockets or satellites was accessed. Also last year, the port of Nagoya in Japan was hit by a malware attack.
