In Nghi Thuan commune, there are more than 80 hectares with dozens of households growing them. The profession of growing chives in this commune has been around for many years. The soil and climate conditions are suitable, so chives grown in Nghi Thuan commune produce large bulbs and a unique aroma that cannot be found anywhere else. Currently, chives are in the harvest season, but the price is "falling" every day, making farmers here sad because they are worried about losing their crops.

While busy digging rows of shallots in the field, Ms. Hoang Thi Nham (born in 1971, resident of Khanh Thien hamlet, Nghi Thuan commune, Nghi Loc) said that starting from July every year, people will go to the fields to prepare the land to plant shallots. By March of the following year, when the shallots are ripe and have many bulbs, people will start digging them up to harvest.

This year, Ms. Hoang Thi Nham's family planted more than 4 sao of shallots. The weather conditions were favorable, so the shallots produced large, numerous and beautiful bulbs. In the first days of the season, the shallots were purchased by traders at 60,000 VND/1kg. However, after a short time, the shallots entered the main season, and households harvested them all at the same time, and the price began to "fall" day by day.

“Yesterday, the day before, traders came to buy for 30,000 VND/1 kg, but today the price has dropped to only 28,000 VND/1 kg. I don’t know how it will go down in a few days,” said Ms. Nham, adding that the price is low so she is the only one harvesting. Harvesting by hand is time-consuming. Each day, Ms. Nham can only harvest about 20-30 kg of shallots.

When harvesting, people have to dig up each onion root by hand and pick up each bulb from the ground to avoid missing any.

Ms. Trinh Thi Thu (born in 1974, residing in Khanh Thien hamlet, Nghi Thuan commune) has about 2 sao of chives. After more than 6 months of planting and caring for them, when it was time to harvest, the price of chives dropped again, making Ms. Thu very disappointed.

The reason for the low price of chives is that people are starting to harvest them en masse at this time, so the supply has increased. Meanwhile, chives are mainly consumed through local traders.

People in Nghi Thuan commune said that in previous years, shallots had good prices, helping farmers earn much better income than those growing rice and peanuts. However, this year, the price of shallots has dropped, and planting, caring for and harvesting shallots takes a lot of time, so people are worried.
