Dangerous landslide threatens the lives of hundreds of households along Tien River

The dangerous landslide section is about 500m long, 30-70m deep inland, directly affecting the lives of 35 households along the Tien River through Cao Lanh ward (Dong Thap province) and threatening the safety of 285 other households.

In recent days, landslides on the Tien River bank through Cao Lanh ward (about 2 km from Cao Lanh bridge) have been complicated.

Due to the impact of heavy rain, rapid flood rise combined with the large number of waterway vehicles passing by, on September 20 and September 24, in Cao Lanh ward, there were 2 landslides on the banks of Tien River in Tan Tich hamlet and Tinh Hung hamlet.

The urgent and dangerous landslide section is about 500m long, 30-70m deep into the mainland, affecting the property of 35 households with 132 people whose houses and land collapsed into the river. The remaining section, about 1,600m long, is at risk of landslides at any time, affecting the safety of life and property of about 285 households with over 900 people.

Faced with the above situation, on the afternoon of September 26, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province issued a decision to declare an emergency situation of landslides on the banks of the Tien River at Nguyen Huong Street (Tan Tich hamlet and Tinh Hung hamlet, Cao Lanh ward).

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nam (born in 1976, residing in Cao Lanh ward), a resident whose house was affected by a landslide, said: his family saved for more than 10 years to build a 110m2 house, costing more than 450 million VND and had only moved in for about 20 days. In the recent landslide, Mr. Nam's family's house collapsed into the river.

Mr. Tran Van Nhi, a resident whose house collapsed into the river, said that at the time of the landslide, there was a loud noise. The house collapsed into the water, Mr. Nhi was lucky to swim to shore safely and suffered only minor scratches. According to the residents, the landslide happened suddenly, sweeping away the house and many of the residents' belongings.

Mr. Bui Quoc Nam, Chairman of Cao Lanh Ward People's Committee said: "The local government has mobilized forces to support the evacuation and relocation of people and property to safe places and provided initial support to affected households."

In recent days, Cao Lanh Ward Police and the Mobile Police Department have arranged vehicles, mobilized officers, soldiers and forces to participate in protecting security and order at the grassroots level, supporting people to move their assets to a safe place and ensuring security and order.

Mr. Tran Tri Quang, Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee, surveyed and inspected the actual situation of landslides on Tien River bank. Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee requested urgent handling of the seriously eroded section and the affected neighboring areas, immediately deploying construction solutions, and plans to be ready to respond and support people to evacuate when landslides occur.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment is assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture to preside over and coordinate with agencies and units to urgently survey and assess the scope of impact that needs to be handled; consult with professional units and experts on measures that need to be implemented to prevent landslides and subsidence from occurring and propose fundamental solutions.

Dong Thap is one of the localities in the Mekong Delta heavily affected by riverbank landslides. According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, there are more than 70 landslides in the communes and wards with a length of more than 7km, with an estimated cost of about 505 billion VND.

Previously, on August 8 and 12, also on the Tien River in the area of ​​the bank erosion protection embankment in Thuong Phuoc commune, there were landslides and subsidence with a length of about 350m, including 4 sections. The Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee signed a decision to declare an emergency situation to respond and overcome the consequences in order to prevent and minimize the damage caused by natural disasters.
