Is the Paris Agreement in jeopardy because of the US election results?

The US election ended with concerns from experts that Washington could weaken its commitment to the fight against global climate change.

According to an article in Climate Home News on November 6, many climate experts warned of the risk of Washington withdrawing from international agreements and commitments on combating climate change after the US election ends.

Ms. Laurence Tubiana, Executive Director of the European Climate Foundation, emphasized that the US election results were a setback for the global common effort to reduce climate change, but the Paris Agreement has proven to be more solid and stronger than the policies of any country.

The current context is very different from when Mr. Trump was first elected in 2016. The United States once led a strong economic momentum thanks to the global green transition, but Washington risks losing that advantage.

Sharing the same view with Ms. Laurence Tubiana, Mr. Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics, warned that the election of a climate change denier as US President is extremely dangerous for the world .

"We have already seen the terrible damage done globally by man-made global warming. If Trump threatens and actually withdraws Washington from the Paris Agreement, the biggest loser will be the United States itself," he added.

Meanwhile, Yao Zhe, global policy adviser at Greenpeace East Asia, said China is expected to take a leadership position in the fight against climate change. To do so, Beijing needs to submit a new climate plan to the United Nations that outlines actions to transition away from fossil fuels.

Chinese experts say climate cooperation has played an important role in stabilizing US-China relations under President Joe Biden. Although the incoming Trump administration may undo some of the climate diplomacy achievements, US-China climate cooperation continues to take place between non-state actors.
