Today, November 28, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) held a ceremony to celebrate 40 years of research cooperation with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).
Contribute to helping Vietnam approach advanced science
According to Professor Le Truong Giang, Vice President of VAST, the event of the Vietnam Academy of Science (former name of VAST) and CNRS signing a cooperation agreement in 1983 in Paris opened up opportunities for Vietnamese scientists to access more advanced science, academic environment, and premise for future developments.

The research cooperation activities between VAST and CNRS have created conditions for the exchange of scientists to conduct joint research, organize workshops and enhance research facilities, as well as form and connect interdisciplinary research groups, increasing the development from basic to applied research, towards the formation of high-quality products, motivating innovation and technology transfer between CNRS and VAST.
One of the outstanding achievements in the cooperation between the two sides is the series of specialized courses, organized annually since 1997. From these courses, more than a thousand Vietnamese researchers were sent to CNRS for scientific exchange, internship, master and doctoral training. Among them, more than 100 staff successfully defended their master and doctoral theses, becoming key scientists of VAST.
Exchange between Vietnamese and French scientists on the sidelines of the celebration
Based on the close cooperation in training and research between VAST and CNRS, the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) was established in 2009. The cooperation between VAST and CNRS during this period has created opportunities for many young scientists of VAST to study and research in an international environment, while contributing to bringing USTH towards the goal of achieving international standards in training and scientific research.
Together we will prepare for the future
At the ceremony, Professor Antoine Petit, President of CNRS, commented that 40 years is a significant period of time, the two sides have succeeded in effective and high-quality research and training cooperation. The fields of cooperation are diverse.
"It may be subjective (Professor Petit comes from the field of mathematics - PV), but I can affirm that the cooperation between the two countries in the field of mathematics is exemplary. We should, or can, develop cooperation in other fields following the model of cooperation in the field of mathematics," said Professor Petit.
According to Professor Antoine Petit, research cooperation in mathematics is a model for other fields in the Vietnam - France cooperative relationship.
According to Professor Petit, the two agencies need to restore thematic classes in the near future. "Thematic classes will help us train future generations of scientists and establish a cooperative relationship between young researchers from both sides to continue what has been done. Vietnam should trust in the companionship of CNRS and not only CNRS, the French scientific community will coordinate and accompany Vietnamese scientists in scientific research in as many fields as possible," Professor Petit shared.
Mr. Olivier Brochet, French Ambassador to Vietnam, also expressed his pride that France, especially CNRS, one of the world's leading scientific research institutions, one of the units that carried out many top-notch research projects in France, has accompanied Vietnam on the path of promoting scientific development.
In 2024, France will carry out a number of activities to materialize this determination. Next year, the French Minister of Science and Technology will visit and work in Vietnam to continue the intergovernmental cooperation agreement on science and technology development.
In particular, in 2024, a ship of the French marine and aquatic environment research team will come to work in Vietnam, and will conduct a joint research project with Vietnamese scientists.
