Urgent mobilization of surgeons to save multiple trauma patients

At 5:00 a.m. the same day, patient Phan Thi Lua (32 years old, Thong Nhat commune, Dong Nai province) and her husband were brought to the hospital by local people with many injuries on their bodies. Ms. Lua was in a coma, had pale skin, pale mucous membranes with a large open wound on her left chest, and a distended abdomen... Doctors diagnosed that the patient was in severe shock due to multiple injuries. Specifically, Ms. Lua had hemopericardium, open fractures of multiple ribs, a ruptured diaphragm, a large ruptured stomach, causing all the food to spill into the pleural cavity, a ruptured liver, a ruptured spleen, and a fractured spine.

Specialist Doctor I Phan Van Phong, Head of General Surgery Department, Long Khanh Regional General Hospital said: The hospital mobilized 7 doctors to operate on patient Lua. Just a few minutes after being admitted to the hospital, the patient was taken to the emergency operating room.

During the surgery, the doctors opened the pericardium to remove all the blood clots, cleaned out the food and digestive fluids in the pleural cavity, sutured the muscles and joined the ribs with screws. At the same time, the doctors sutured the wounds in the liver, spleen, stomach, diaphragm and cleaned the abdominal cavity, draining the pleural cavity.

Doctors had to transfuse 8 units of blood (nearly 3 liters) to save the patient. The surgery lasted more than 3 hours. After the surgery, the patient still needed a ventilator but his pulse and blood pressure were stable.

Patient Lua's husband is still in serious condition and is being closely monitored.
