At 3 p.m., the mother N. gave birth naturally to a baby boy weighing 2.7 kg. Surprisingly, the baby's umbilical cord was wrapped 6 times around his neck. Fortunately, the birth went smoothly, and the mother and baby are in stable health.
Dr. Hoang Van Toan, Head of the Obstetrics Department, Tuyen Hoa Regional General Hospital, said that during her pregnancy, the pregnant woman N. was examined regularly and discovered early that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. However, the doctors assessed that it was not dangerous and instructed the pregnant woman to closely monitor herself at home. During labor, the pregnant woman was continuously monitored to promptly handle any unexpected events.
“Previously, the ultrasound only showed the umbilical cord wrapped 3-4 times, but when the baby was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped 6 times. This is a very rare case. Fortunately, the baby is still safe,” Dr. Toan shared.
Doctors recommend that pregnant women should have regular check-ups to promptly detect abnormalities that may affect the fetus, including the condition of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck.
According to doctors, multiple umbilical cord loops can cause the baby's head to bend poorly, hindering normal birth. This condition is often detected by ultrasound, pregnant women should not worry too much, just need to monitor closely, because in many cases, the umbilical cord can untie itself when the fetus turns.
