Russian President Vladimir Putin received his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian at the Kremlin on January 17.

Visiting the Kremlin for the first time since being elected President of Iran in July 2024, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian said that Russia and Iran will probably close a deal to build the next nuclear power plant in Iran with Russia's help, according to Reuters.

Russia helped Iran build its first nuclear power plant in Bushehr, which became operational in 2013.

For his part, President Putin said the two discussed all areas of bilateral cooperation and moved towards signing a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty.

"We spent a lot of time working on it and I am extremely pleased that everything has been completed," TASS news agency quoted the Kremlin leader as saying.

The treaty is expected to play a turning point in Russian-Iranian relations and open up new opportunities in such areas as military , counter-terrorism, energy, finance, transport, industry, agriculture, culture, science and technology.

Tehran will no longer be the capital of Iran?

The 20-year Russia-Iran pact is not expected to include a bilateral defense clause like the ones with Belarus and North Korea, but Reuters quoted observers as saying that the West is likely to still feel concerned about seeing Moscow and Tehran getting closer.

Iran and Russia affirmed that the tightening of bilateral relations is not aimed directly at any country.

The Kremlin did not answer questions about whether it would buy Iranian missiles, but said cooperation with Tehran included "the most sensitive areas".

In the past, Russia has provided Iran with S-300 missile defense systems and Iranian media have mentioned that Tehran wants to buy more advanced weapons such as the S-400 and modern Russian fighters.
