Israel angry with Spanish Prime Minister

An angry Israel summoned the Spanish ambassador to reprimand him after Prime Minister Sanchez questioned Tel Aviv's respect for humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip.

In a social media post, Secretary Cohen said he had recalled the Israeli ambassador to Spain for consultations. "Israel conducts itself and will continue to conduct itself in accordance with international law," Mr. Cohen said.

Hamas attacked Israeli territory early last month, killing 1,200 people. Tel Aviv vowed to "crush" Hamas in response and launched a large-scale military campaign that has killed around 15,000 people in Gaza.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry then quickly summoned the Spanish and Belgian ambassadors to "strongly criticize" the comments of the two countries' leaders. In response, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest Tel Aviv's accusations.

Despite the diplomatic tensions, Mr. Sanchez said in an interview on November 30 that the relationship between Israel and Spain was "correct" and "countries with friendly relations must also talk frankly with each other."
