Inheriting and promoting Hanoi culture in the new period

Hanoi - the land of a thousand years of civilization - has always been considered the center of crystallization and dissemination of typical cultural values of the nation. From ancient Thang Long - Dong Do to the capital Hanoi today, generations of Hanoians have built up a unique identity, which is elegance, civilization, loyalty, studiousness and creativity. These values not only create pride for Hanoians but also contribute to positioning the capital's brand in the eyes of international friends.

Preserving traditional quintessence

Hanoian culture is first and foremost a convergence of a thousand-year-old tradition. It is an elegant style in communication, carefulness and elegance in speech, a studious spirit and a deep sense of community. According to Professor - Architect Hoang Dao Kinh, "elegant Trang An people" is not just a figurative concept, but a behavioral standard crystallized through many generations.

Professor Hoang Dao Kinh analyzed, Thang Long - Hanoi was once a real capital, flourishing and declining over time, thus, shaping the appearance of an urban area - Ke Cho. This created the character of Hanoi people, the elegance and grace of the capital but very quick in business, valuing the love of Ke Cho people.

“Hanoi people are gentle and elegant. Whether in business or in daily life, they do not compete but put trust first. The same goes for eating and drinking, from daily meals to ceremonial feasts, everything is neat, meticulous and standard,” said Professor Hoang Dao Kinh.

According to Dr. Nguyen Viet Chuc, Deputy Head of the Advisory Council on Culture and Society (Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front), Hanoi's culture is the convergence and diffusion of national quintessence, creating distinction and sophistication. It is the harmony of many cultures that has created a multi-colored Hanoi. In addition, customs, festivals, historical relics and traditional spaces are places that nurture the cultural values and human values of Hanoi.

Hanoi currently has 6,489 relics, 1,797 intangible cultural heritages (including 1,206 traditional festivals), many heritages recognized by UNESCO, such as: Ca tru, Xam, Giong festival, Tan Vien Son Thanh worship ceremony... Hanoi cuisine also shows sophistication, a philosophy of life that values harmony, with many dishes recognized as national intangible cultural heritages, such as: Pho, La Vong fish cakes, Thanh Tri rice rolls, Bat Trang dishes, lotus tea-scented knowledge... This is not only a heritage but also the identity of Hanoi people.

According to Dr. Pham Thi Lan Anh, Head of the Department of Cultural Management (Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports ), restoring heritage spaces and bringing heritage into contemporary life is the responsibility and way to inherit the culture of the capital.

New resources for building and developing the capital

In the context of global integration, inheriting and promoting the culture of Hanoi people has become an urgent task, both to preserve the origin and to create a modern, dynamic capital that is still imbued with its identity. Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong has repeatedly affirmed that developing culture and building Hanoi people is a key task of Hanoi.

Reality has shown that Hanoi has been implementing many programs and actions to promote heritage values and build people of the new era. In recent years, a series of creative tourism and cultural products have been born, demonstrating the creative flow of Hanoians today. These include the Hoa Lo Prison night tour, the "Decoding Thang Long Imperial Citadel" experience tour, the 3D mapping program "The Quintessence of Confucianism" at the Temple of Literature, or the "Ngoc Son - Mysterious Night" night tour...

Not only creating on the foundation of traditional heritage, the new-age Hanoians also open new cultural spaces, contributing to bringing Hanoi culture in harmony with global trends, such as: Complex 01, Heritage Space, Manzi, Hanoi Creative City...

Hanoi culture is not only in cultural heritage but also expressed through daily lifestyle and behavior.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son, Standing Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society, if heritage is the origin, then people are the subjects that preserve and promote culture. Hanoi needs to focus on human development, in which family education, school, community orientation and government play a key role in forming cultured Hanoi citizens.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son said that, in addition to building widespread movements such as: "All people unite to build culture", "Cultural family", "Cultural village", "Cultural neighborhood group"... Hanoi needs to focus on education and training of human resources to build new people with modern knowledge, foreign language skills, technology and integration awareness.

At the Conference summarizing Program No. 06-CTr/TU on "Cultural development, improving the quality of human resources, building elegant and civilized Hanoians in the period of 2021-2025" held last March, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong affirmed that the city has made appropriate investments in education - training and culture, clearly defining the goal: Taking culture and people as one of the five important pillars and the driving force for the development of the Capital.

“We need to turn Hanoi’s cultural and human resources into truly new resources to build and develop the capital in the right direction of a civilized, modern, globally connected capital. To do that, localities and units need to quickly adapt to the innovations of the capital and the country, promote digital transformation in all fields, especially in the fields of culture, education, and development of high-quality human resources,” said comrade Nguyen Van Phong.

It can be seen that inheriting and promoting the culture of Hanoi people is not only about preserving what has existed, but also about creating the future. In the integration process, Hanoi needs to continue to encourage creativity, develop green spaces, underground spaces, digital spaces and community cultural centers, so that culture and people can truly become a solid spiritual foundation.
