Giant chicken hotel in the Philippines

Perched on a hilltop in a resort on the island of Negros Occidental is a 6-story, 35-meter-high building shaped like a giant chicken called Manok ni Cano. The structure is a hotel with 15 air-conditioned rooms but no windows. According to Ricardo Cano Gwapo Tan, the hotel’s owner, windows would affect the aesthetics of the chicken’s feathers, making the building incomplete.

On September 8, the hotel was recognized by Guinness World Records as " the world's largest building shaped like a chicken". Explaining the reason for building the hotel in this shape, Tan said "I want to leave a great legacy in this world".

Tan, a former politician in his 70s, considers the resort his “playground” for creating impressive works. Despite his age, Tan still claims to have the soul of a child.

Tan built the building to honor the poultry industry, which employs tens of thousands of Filipinos. He also wanted to emphasize the importance of chickens to the islanders.

Visitors to the island, in addition to staying at this unique building, can also participate in the experience of watching cockfights, or sabong in the local language. This is a traditional pastime that dates back to the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Today, cockfights are also popular in rural areas of Thailand and Indonesia, but are banned in India.

“The cockfighting industry is a multi-billion peso empire on the island,” Tan said. Cockfighting rings across the country now rake in millions of pesos from bets.

Currently, there are more than 2,000 poultry farms across the island and it has become the leading industry in the province, alongside sugar production and pig farming.

The rooster-shaped hotel was completed in time to welcome guests for Christmas. Tan said that as a child, the rooster crowed in December as a reminder for families to attend Misa de Gallo, or Mass of the Rooster, a dawn prayer service during the nine days leading up to Christmas.

Currently, the rooster-shaped resort and hotel are fully booked until January 2025. A room for four people at the rooster hotel costs nearly $80. A larger room that can accommodate seven people at a time costs $120.

The resort is also owned by the Tan family. His wife, Anita, bought the quiet mountain property decades ago. Expanding the property in 2010, the resort now has two wave pools, a restaurant, a cafe and hundreds of cartoon figurines for kids to enjoy.

To get to the Rooster Hotel, visitors will land at the capital Manila or Cebu airport and then take a flight to Bacolod-Silay International Airport in Negros Occidental. From the airport, visitors will take a taxi for a further 16 km to reach the resort.
