Seaweed is a large brown algae species that grows in clumps in tidal areas, distributed in many communes such as Van Tuong, Dong Son, Sa Huynh ward and Ly Son special zone.
However, spontaneous exploitation, including young seaweed and cutting close to the root, has reduced production, threatening the coastal ecosystem. If co-management helps to sustainably protect seaweed resources, then proper exploitation and deep processing will open up a new direction for economic development for Quang Ngai.
In fact, for many years, seaweed has been mainly dried by people, pressed into blocks and exported raw to China, with an output of about 400 - 500 tons per year. The economic value is therefore not high, not commensurate with the potential. To increase economic value, we must first change the exploitation habits.
In addition, seaweed cutting techniques must also be followed. Thus, seaweed is not only exploited reasonably but also has the ability to regenerate naturally, ensuring long-term benefits.
