What to eat in 48 hours exploring Hanoi?

In mid-June 2024, Michelin Guides (Michelin travel guide) gave some suggestions on places to visit and eat for tourists in 48 hours when coming to Hanoi. That is an interesting suggestion for foreign tourists when coming to Hanoi in the summer.

According to the Michelin guide, Hanoi, besides attracting tourists by the blend of historical and modern beauty, bustling streets, tree-lined old quarters..., Hanoi cuisine is a cultural feature that should not be missed. Not only Michelin, many famous travel sites in the world also praise Hanoi cuisine, such as Tripadvisor voted Hanoi as the world's top culinary destination in 2024.

Michelin's detailed suggestion for exploring Hanoi's cuisine in 48 hours is that on the first day, visitors should start by leisurely strolling through the old quarter, such as Tran Hung Dao, Ly Thuong Kiet, Hai Ba Trung streets, then enjoy a cup of coffee on Trieu Viet Vuong street or an egg coffee at the Sofitel Metropole Legend Hanoi hotel (Ngo Quyen street, Hoan Kiem district).

If you are an early riser, stop by the beef noodle soup restaurant on Au Trieu Street. For lunch, those who like to wander around and explore street food should look for a bun cha restaurant (the Michelin guide recommends the bun cha Huong Lien restaurant, which once served former US President Barack Obama). For dinner, the suggested dish is the signature crab hotpot at 1946 Restaurant (Quan Thanh Ward, Ba Dinh District). The journey to discover Hanoi's cuisine includes interesting heritage destinations such as the Vietnamese Women's Museum and Hoa Lo Prison.

On the second day of exploring Hanoi, visitors should spend time visiting parks, flower gardens and cultural heritages, such as Thong Nhat Park, Hanoi Opera House, and the National History Museum. Besides dining places, Michelin suggests visitors go to a bar on the rooftop of a high-rise building, sip a cocktail and admire the panoramic view of Hanoi from above as a farewell to this city.

Attractive culinary destination

According to Michelin's recommendation list, Hanoi currently has 13 restaurants receiving Bib Gourmand awards, 32 restaurants on the Michelin Selected list and 1 Michelin award for outstanding young chefs. Notably, Hanoi has 3 restaurants awarded 1 Michelin star. On December 20, 2016, Hanoi continued to have 5 restaurants introduced by Michelin to the Bib Gourmand list. These are: Bun Cha Chan, Luk Lak, Dong Thinh eel vermicelli, Mr Bay Mien Tay and Pho Khoi Hoi. With this addition, Hanoi has a prestigious and rich "culinary map" for tourists.

According to the assessment of General Secretary of the Vietnam Chefs Association (Vietnam Tourism Association) Nguyen Xuan Quynh, Hanoi cuisine is considered a "rising star" on the global tourism map. With this advantage, Hanoi can develop culinary tourism routes to enhance the experience of tourists. However, currently, the weakness of Hanoi culinary tourism is the lack of connection between dining establishments and tourist attractions.

According to Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Tourism Association Phung Quang Thang, in order for restaurants to become tourist destinations, where visitors not only explore cuisine but also explore Hanoi culture through food, businesses need to change their way of doing things, pay attention to food hygiene and safety; decorate stores, create beautiful dishes that meet international standards.

Currently, many restaurants and food establishments, after being included in the Michelin recommended list, have focused on investing in building their image and improving product quality. Specifically, Ngon Garden Restaurant (70 Nguyen Du Street), Ngon Restaurant (18 Phan Boi Chau Street) of Phuc Hung Thinh Joint Stock Company (in the Michelin selection list announced in 2023) have regularly renewed their culinary space. General Director Pham Bich Hanh said that the unit designs the space of the chain of restaurants according to each flower season, creating highlights with the image of Hanoi culture, to turn the culinary establishments into tourist destinations.

It can be seen that cuisine is one of the strengths of Hanoi tourism. Currently, with the increasing number of restaurants and standard dining establishments, Hanoi is forming a prestigious and quality culinary map. However, for culinary tourism to develop sustainably, in addition to an attractive "culinary map", Hanoi needs to build tours and routes that have close connections between destinations and culinary establishments, as well as promote and introduce this cultural feature to tourists.
