Success from small model
One of the typical examples is Mrs. Tran Thi Hue (65 years old, A Luoi 2 commune), a household that raises livestock and does business in a chain of organic agricultural stores. “Since 2018, my family has been selected as a pilot model for biosafety organic livestock farming. After signing a contract with Que Lam Group, my family has built solid barns according to instructions, and has been trained in organic pig farming processes and biosafety processes according to the 4F organic agricultural complex,” said Mrs. Hue.
Up to now, her family has raised 8 sows, selling 160 - 170 pigs each year, earning about 160 million VND/year. In addition, she has also expanded an organic pig farm for relatives to participate in, taking advantage of fertilizer from organic pig farming to grow vegetables, sweet potatoes, pumpkins... bringing in an income of 250,000 - 300,000 VND/day. Along with that, she has an additional stable source of income from building a network to consume organic rice and organic fertilizer.
Not only Ms. Hue, many other elderly people have also boldly invested and developed the economy in a modern direction. Mr. Nguyen Van Lich (67 years old), Director of Thanh Tra Agricultural Cooperative, is another typical example. In 2018, Mr. Lich's family started to cooperate in organic pig farming with Que Lam Group. After two years of production cooperation, when the economic efficiency was achieved, he invested an additional 1 billion VND to completely rebuild the barn system according to the miniature 4F model, increasing the total herd to 8 sows and 2 cows. He also established Thanh Tra Phong Thu Cooperative with an area of 20 hectares and encouraged 15 elderly farmers to participate in the circular economic organic agricultural value chain with Que Lam Group.
Opportunities and challenges for the older generation
At the workshop "Assessing the current situation and needs of the elderly to participate in promoting digital transformation, green transformation, entrepreneurship and job creation" organized by the City Elderly Association Representative Board in coordination with the Central Association of the Elderly of Vietnam and the Que Lam Group in early August in Hue , the green transformation target was discussed with at least 100 million trees planted, each province has at least 3 models of organic agricultural production, circular economy. Thus, green transformation and job creation are inevitable trends.
Many opinions proposed at the workshop were to build pilot models for the elderly to participate in this field, at the same time promote consulting and feedback activities, as well as monitor, supervise and evaluate the effectiveness of the project implementation process. In addition, reviewing, evaluating, selecting, consolidating and improving the quality of existing models is very necessary, in order to create conditions for maintaining and replicating suitable models in the community.
Reality has proven that, when conditions permit and with proper support, the elderly can fully keep up with new development trends, especially in the field of sustainable agricultural economics. Therefore, policies in the coming time need to put the elderly at the center of new rural development programs, green economy, circulation and digital transformation. Not only stopping at encouragement, there needs to be specific mechanisms to support preferential loans, technical training, market and technology connections, thereby maximizing the experience, prestige and leadership role of the elderly in the community.
“In order for the elderly to continue to play their role in economic development, it is necessary to have the support of family, society and especially young people who are qualified, enthusiastic and willing to support in the form of “hand-holding” to help the elderly access new technologies, new thinking and be more confident in the economic process,” Mr. Ho Viet Le, Chairman of the Association of the Elderly in Hue City, proposed.
