Heartbreaking moment: Mother receives diploma on behalf of deceased daughter

Tears rolled down the mother's face as she put on her bachelor's gown and stood silently beside her daughter's altar to receive the university diploma that her daughter had always dreamed of.

Born and raised in Le Thuy commune, Quang Tri province (formerly Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province), in 2018, Do Thi Tra entered the University of Science and Technology - Danang University with the aspiration of becoming an architect.

Tra completed the entire program of study and successfully defended her graduation project in 2023. However, the terrible kidney failure prevented her from completing the foreign language certificate, a mandatory condition for graduation.

Not giving up on fate, even on her sickbed, Tra still diligently studied English. However, in July 2024, she passed away forever, when her twenties were still brilliant and her dreams were still unfulfilled.

On September 18, the Board of Directors of Danang University of Technology decided to specially award Tra an architecture degree.

In the quiet house, Tra's mother trembled as she put on her daughter's graduation gown, her eyes red with longing. Her father also stood silently by the altar, remembering his first daughter who could not attend the graduation ceremony like her classmates.

"When the teachers arrived at the alley, Tra's parents burst into tears. Even though Tra had been gone for a year, the pain and longing were still evident on their faces," said teacher Le Phong Nguyen, head teacher of class 18KT CLC (University of Technology - University of Danang), choking with emotion.

When Dr. Huynh Phuong Nam, Vice Principal of the school, awarded the special diploma, everyone who witnessed it was moved to tears.

"I have awarded many diplomas, but this is the most special case. The school and I personally are satisfied because we have fulfilled Tra's last wish. She has become an architect, with a diploma placed next to her portrait," Dr. Huynh Phuong Nam emotionally told Thanh Nien reporter.

Graduation in everyone's heart

Tomorrow (September 20), Danang University of Technology will hold a graduation ceremony for new graduates. The school's board of directors has agreed to hold the graduation ceremony for Tra at her home.

Not only for the family, this degree also has profound humanistic meaning for all students and lecturers of the school.

"The educational philosophy of the University of Science and Technology - University of Danang is 'Thinking - Creativity - Nurturing compassion'. Through Tra's story, we want to send a message to students: nurture compassion in every specific action", Dr. Huynh Phuong Nam advised.

As for Mr. Nguyen, the memory of the student who has been with the 18KT CLC class for 5 years is her resilience, a shining example of determination and love for the profession. "Tra's story will give strength to young people, so that even in adversity, they will not stop pursuing their dreams," Mr. Nguyen was moved.

On the official fanpage, Danang University of Technology wrote a farewell message to female student Do Thi Tra: "Sleep well, Tra. The degree you have always dreamed of is now with you. You have truly graduated...".
